Scotty moans from under the blankets, annoyed to be woken up by the insistent ringing of his telephone. This is the third time that the caller lets it ring until the end. Scotty shoves his blankets aside and leaves the bedroom to reply, realizing it's the only way to stop that infernal noise.
Kevin rolls to Scotty's side of the bed, still half asleep, but willing to keep the place warm for when Scotty returns. It takes longer than expected, but then he hears the door to bedroom open and Scotty walks over to the bed. He sits down.
"Kev, I think we should get dressed, take the car and go into the valley."
It sounds serious and right away Kevin is awake.
"What's wrong?"
"That phone-call? That was my colleague Candice. That new hotel where we took all our guests to? It got hit by an avalanche. Snow came down the mountain and hit in 3 places, one of them is the hotel."
"Oh my God. Any casualties?"
"It happened about an hour ago. Everyone is still in a panic and in shock."
"My family!" Kevin suddenly realizes.
"Candice is sure that she saw your mother and your sister and her husband. That Senator?"
"Kitty and Robert. What about the others?"
"She couldn't quite remember, it's all rather hectic. She's sure about your mother and sister though."
"Yeah, well, if necessary my mother will dig out the rest of the family with her bare hands."
Scotty doesn't react immediately. He can somehow imagine that Nora would actually do that, if she thought one of her kids were in danger.
"Candice begged me to come and help. I thought you might want to join me. I will tell you more once we're in my car."

It still took a long drive to get into the town and to get to the hotel. Kevin feels shaken and stirred by the time they get there. He's glad to get out of the car and put his feet down. Scotty had taken a small detour by the Sunny Meadows hotel, where he had started up the electricity and heating.
It bothered him to leave the hotel unattended, but he had to get to his colleagues. And Kevin has no idea what he'd have to look for, so Scotty couldn't leave him at the hotel. Plus, Kevin is too worried about his family. He couldn't ask that of Kevin to begin with. Decisions, decisions.
Once out of the car both men look around.
"I'm going to see if I can find someone like the mayor, from the police, fire-department or something like that. I can't believe that someone in authority hasn't shown up yet. Maybe I can find Mr Green. He should be running this hotel." Scotty says and he's gone.
Kevin has registered Scotty's words, but is too distracted by what he sees. The building is heavily hit at the back. In front people sit on wooden chairs, covered with blankets and whatever else they can find to keep warm. People are clearly in shock. Some cry silently, some just walk around in circles. Some people just stare into nothing.
A family is huddled together on a bench. Further away an elderly man sits alone, holding up a picture and asking everyone who's passing if they've seen his wife. Then Kevin sees a woman dragging and pushing a car with hot coffee and tea and he starts to laugh and cry at the same time. Only Nora!
"Mom!" He cries.
"Oh, honey! Are you alright?" She hugs him tightly.
"I should ask you that question. You are the ones to get hit. Not me. Is everyone alright? Is someone missing?"
The fact that Nora is distributing coffee and tea is an answer on its own. She wouldn't do that if one of her kids was missing.
"We're fine. Took a while, but we found each other. It's such chaos. Thank god, I'm a volunteer for the Earthquake-comity in our neighborhood.
I tried to get help as quickly as I could. But I don't anyone here, I don't know who to contact. I've tried to reach the people here and find out how they are. I sent Robert, Justin and Tommy to get as many blankets as they could put their hands on. But some rooms are inaccessible. Might still have people in them. And I'm offering something hot to drink. Thank God the kitchen was spared and has gas and electricity, but it's too small to gather people in there.
We need to do something. Some people are so in shock." She hands a woman a cup with hot tea and puts some sugar in it at the woman's quiet request. "What more can I do right now? Can you think of something?" At that moment Kevin sees Tommy and Justin emerge the side of the building.
Glad to see each other safe, the brothers hug, all bad emotions immediately forgotten. Robert and Kitty join them now too and eventually Kevin can even hold his niece and nephew back in his arms, while Sarah clearly tries to hide her tears. Unable to do much more Kevin, Kitty and Sarah help Nora with the distribution of the hot drinks.
Staff from the hotel exit what remains of the kitchen, carrying trays with sandwiches. Kevin helps where he can, as do Justin and Tommy. Robert is busy on the phone and though Kevin doesn't say anything, Kitty defends Robert's inaction with:
"Robert is trying to get in touch with the governor of the state, to get extra help."
"If anyone can, he can." Kevin answers curtly. Robert and he are not exactly friends, but it's clear that more help is needed here. After what seems an eternity, but is probably just an hour or so, Kevin see Scotty coming in his direction.
"Look! Scotty is coming back. Maybe he has more info." Kevin says.
Nora looks at her son. And then at Scotty. The way those two look at each other, looks speaking volumes? They communicate silently. She starts to smile. Well, obviously, someone got lucky this holiday and she couldn't be happier. Kevin deserves it after the lousy year he has had.
"Any news?" Kevin asks breathlessly, because Scotty looks puzzled and concerned.
"I had a quick talk with the mayor. And with someone from the fire-department. And with a few colleagues. And the police. I've been allowed to go inside Mr Green's office, though the fire-department and the police are now ordering everyone to stay out of the building."
"What's going on?" Nora now asks.
"Damned if I know. First off, the mayor was furious that there were guests in this hotel, because no security-check had been done and no permit was given to open the hotel."
"What? But you were told to get the guests here because Sunny Meadows was in the danger-zone. Did you explain the situation about Sunny Meadows?"
"Kev, Sunny Meadows is, as I already said, not in the danger-zone. The area is too flat. There was never a warning to evacuate." Scotty answers. "And we, that's the mayor and I, thought at first that Mr Green had tried to steal the guests away from Sunny Meadows for the new hotel, but as it turns out there are other things going on."
"Like what?" Nora asks.
"For one: Mr Greene is missing. Probably since last night. His car is gone too. And, number two, the police allowed me to check out our finances. As manager I had access to all our financial data, because I had to be able to make decisions and payments, even when Mr Greene wasn't immediately around.
Everything's gone! All the money! From the new hotel and from Sunny Meadows. He cleaned out all bank-accounts over the last few days. It's probably the reason why he gave me 2 weeks off. The new manager wouldn't have access. He could do whatever he wanted.
Kevin, I can't pay our staff the money I owe them over the month of December. I can't afford to do anything! I thought about asking the busdrivers to drive everyone back to Sunny Meadows, as that hotel is safe. But I wouldn't be able to pay their bills. I can't reimburse guests who want to leave. My hands are tied. I can't do anything."
"Oh, Scotty...." Kevin feels sad to see how upset Scotty is.
"More than that. Sunny Meadows got sold last week. As of the 23th of December the hotel no longer belongs to Mr Green. I no longer have a right to be there either.
If I would access the hotel now, I'd be trespassing. I have no idea who the new owner is or how to contact him, her or them. I don't know." Kevin suddenly remembers the messages he had had this morning. Chad now owns the hotel. Maybe there's at least one problem he can solve.
"But I know who bought. I'll get in touch with him and try to see what I can do." Kevin promises. "I'll be right back."
"Kevin!" Nora calls Kevin back. "Who bought the hotel?"
"Chad." Kevin answers with a grin and he takes out his phone and starts calling.
Nora turns back to Scotty who is still upset.
"Don't worry. If Chad bought the hotel, Kevin can fix things." She smiles.
"Yeah, Chad would take the stars out of the sky if Kevin would ask him to."
Justin laughs, placing a hand on Scotty's shoulder to offer comfort.
"Though it will probably mean that Kevin will have to accept his proposal for marriage now." The others laugh and Scotty feels stunned. Kevin is about to get engaged? Kevin had never even mentioned someone named Chad.
"I think we should take on one problem at a time." Nora says, not noticing Scotty's distress. "Kitty, I see that some news-crews have arrived. Can you handle those?"
"Sure, mom." And Kitty disappears.
"Scotty, can you get me a list of the guest in the hotel. I think your plan to bring the guests back to a safe place is a good one. If necessary I will get Sarah and Tommy to pay for the busses from our business account. We'll work it out. The safety of the guests should be the most important thing right now. Let's get them to a warm place."
"I'm officially not allowed to access the building right now." Scotty counters.
"Ah, don't worry. Kevin will deal with that. Chad will do whatever Kevin asks him to. Can you get me a list? If you call for the buses, we will get people on board and check who is coming with us."
"Do you know if some guests have left on their own?" Scotty asks.
"No. But it's unlikely. All the cars were parked in the garage in the basement of the hotel. There's no way to access them right now. We'll have to make do with what we have. One step at a time, honey."
Scotty nods quietly.
"Meanwhile, Justin has found out that two or the guests are nurses. The three of them are checking out injuries. My son was a paramedic in Afghanistan and Iraq. He knows what he's doing. Any idea when we will see an ambulance?"
"No. There were 2 other avalanches. Right now, all services are spread thin. Firemen, police, forest-rangers, volunteers. Everyone is doing what they can, but they have to be in 3 places at the same time."
"Well, that's not going to help."
Nora looks around only to see Kevin come back to them.
"Excuse me. I see a colleague I want to speak to. I will try to get you that list asap and call for the busses." Scotty walks away before Kevin reaches them. The news that Kevin has a near-fiancé named Chad has knocked him out and he feels he needs time to catch his breath.
"Were's Scotty going?"
"I gave him 2 chores." Nora replies. "News?"
"No worries. Chad has decided to come here. Apparently he's been lied to as well. He was told the staff would stay and the guests too, not that he would buy an empty hotel."
"Mhmm, weird." Nora stops. "I have the feeling that this Mr Green in a crook. Didn't like him much. He was such a weasel." Nora can however not dwell on it, because a young woman walks up to her.
"Mrs Walker? I'm Candice. Scotty has asked me to give you this list."
"Ah! Thank you!"
"And to tell you that he called for the busses. All four will be made available to us. Free of charge. The man who owns the busses says that this is such an emergency that it would be a sin to ask money for it. On Christmas Day no less."
"Good to know that there are still decent people on this planet."
"Can I help you with anything?"
"Yes. You know the guests better than I do. Shall we tally together to find out who is coming with us and how many are missing?" Nora asks.
*****
Scotty is glad to be back at Sunny Meadows. He had driven up with 3 other staff members in his own car. He had heard that he was allowed to use the hotel and so the four of them had gone ahead to get everything ready. Nancy was at the reception desk, starting up computers.
Petey and Belle had helped Scotty make a quick run of the rooms. It had been so hectic when they left the hotel that certain chores hadn't been fulfilled. Scotty can feel desperation, it will be too much work to get the rooms ready in the limited time they have.
"There's too much to do.." Scotty moans.
"We're here, boss." He hears someone behind him say. When he turns around he can see that his cleaning-crew is there. All 10 of them. "We heard it on the radio. We came here to help."
"I can't tell you how grateful I am." Scotty says, barely able to hold back his tears. Debbie, head of the cleaning-crew, puts her big hands on his shoulders.
"Scotty, go to your room. You look beat. Put your head under the cold tap. Relax. Take a few minutes to calm down. You're doing good."
Scotty nods and turns around. He has a room in the hotel and maybe just a few minutes to regroup would help him.
"Scotty, kitchen is up and running. Our chef-cook had reported for duty. He's expecting a few others to join him within 20 minutes." Nancy reports when she sees him.
"Thank you. I'll be in my room. Just give me 10 minutes to get my thoughts organized, okay?" Nancy nods that she heard him and Scotty goes into his little room on the first floor. It's has just a bed, a table and a small tv. The ensuite has only a shower, no bath, but it's all Scotty really needs. A place to sleep and freshen up.
The temperature in the hotel is now comfortably warm and Scotty sits down on his bed. He feels a bit lost. He has no idea what do. He hadn't signed up for the new hotel yet. And if Chad is indeed Kevin's soon-to-be fiancé then Scotty doubts that he would want Scotty to stay at Sunny Meadows.
All he can do is his job and do it as well as he can and hope that this Chad will give him a favorable reference, once he gets fired. Scotty bites his lip, because he doesn't want to cry. But he had fallen in love with Kevin and he knows it. And he had sincerely believed that the feeling had been mutual.
Of course, he should have known that it wouldn't last, but that didn't give Kevin the right to lie to him and to use him like this. He had been such a fool. He doesn't want to cry, but the tears come anyway. Slowly at first, but then there's no stopping them anymore. He hides his face in his pillow and sobs.
