"I wish sometimes that Valentine's Day was not such a 'I must be romantic'-day." Kevin sighs. It's Valentine's Day evening and Kevin and Scotty are both in bed, too exhausted after working all night at the restaurant. Scotty in the kitchen, Kevin behind the bar. They had both been on their feet all night and they are now too lazy to do something else.
Scotty smiles, picking a chocolate out of the box that Kevin had given him. A box with a beautiful red rose on top of it. Scotty loves the deep red color and how soft it is.
"Why? I think you did pretty well this year." It's supposed to be a compliment, but Kevin shrugs.
"Thank you. But I would love to give chocolates every day, not just on Valentine's Day." Scott offers him the box, but Kevin has trouble picking one to this taste.
"And I would love to eat them, every day, but, hello expanding waist-line. Never mind the sugar-levels that sky-rocket." Scotty jokes.
Kevin gets Scotty's point and finally picks one of the chocolates.
"I just wanted to do something really, really romantic. Not just chocolate and a rose."
"But I love chocolates. And my rose." Scotty lets the soft petals of the rose caress his face.
Kevin leans in and kisses Scotty. He's happy that Scotty had liked his little gifts.
"They are just so standard, not the extra-ordinary gift you deserve." He says and Scotty takes a moment to let it sink in that Kevin feels that he deserves more than he got.
"So, what would you have liked to give instead?"
Kevin sighs.
"I don't know. Something that would sweep you of your feet. Something like in those romantic movies. Like kissing under an umbrella in the rain."
"And catch pneumonia from the being soaking wet? No thanks."
"I can forget about a romantic dinner. You're the best cook in town." Kevin sighs, Scotty rolls his eyes, but he loves the compliment too much, so he teases:
"Of course I am. You always have the best taste and you know where to get the best meals."
"...And you're so modest about it too...." Kevin mumbles. For a few moments Kevin and Scotty laugh softly and lovingly, each picking another chocolate out of the box.
"Perhaps, next year, I should get a white horse and ride off into the sunset with you."
"Right here? In the middle of Los Angeles? That's animal abuse."
"Yeah, you're probably right.... Hot air-balloon?"
"I think that might trigger my fear of heights."
"Kidnap you to a romantic island?"
"But I love working on Valentine's Day. We had 4 proposals in our restaurant tonight."
"I loved the one who gave her girlfriend the wedding-ring in a red velvet cupcake, that you had made especially for her."
"That was romantic. But then you and red velvet cupcakes are a love story on its own."
"Not just any red velvets. They have to be yours."
Scotty smirks at his husband's words. It reminds him that he gave some cupcakes to Kevin this morning.
"And, boy, was that box empty in no time this morning." Scotty grins.
"Yeah, with the help of Olivia and Daniel." Kevin points out, a little disappointed that his favorite cake had vanished so quickly.
Scotty rolls over and opens the door of the nightstand.
"Well, lucky for you then, that I made 4 extra and hid them from everybody." He gives Kevin a box and when Kevin looks inside, he finds 4 perfect red velvet cupcakes that make his mouth water.
"Oh, you know the way to my heart...." Kevin sighs.
"Well it is Valentine's Day after all. And you got me my favorite chocolates and my favorite flower." Scotty rolls on his back, hiding a proud little grin when he sees Kevin pick out one of the cupcakes, because he cannot wait any longer. He can also see the hesitation before Kevin offers him one as well.
It amuses him to no end to see Kevin this greedy about his cupcakes. He shakes his head however and picks another chocolate out of the box, satisfied that he no longer has to share those with Kevin. He's probably just as greedy about his chocolates as Kevin is about the cupcakes.
"Maybe I should just book a surprise vacation, somewhere in the middle of nowhere."
"You? In the middle of nowhere? You'd be bored to death... What would we do there?"
"I could imagine us, making love in a hayloft or something."
"Yeah, No. Then I'll be the one on top. Any idea how much that itches?"
"And then you say I'm not romantic... Though, as usual, I wouldn't mind you being on top... Wait! How do you know it itches?..."
"Hey, you were not my first boyfriend, you know."
"You had sex in a hayloft?" Kevin asks.
"You haven't?" Scotty is surprised.
"There aren't that many haylofts on California's beaches. I loved to surf when I was a teenager, remember?"
"I still don't know how to surf, though Justin and Tommy did try to teach me."
For a moment they are both silent. Kevin finishes his cupcake. He licks his fingers clean, something that stirs to live a certain feeling in Scotty.
"I could teach you." Kevin says, looking at his husband.
"Does that mean.. you... me... wetsuits?"
"Mhmm-mmm." Kevin nods.
"And, if I'm a good boy,.... I can strip you afterwards...?"
"Mmmmaybe. If you've been really good."
"Oh, I will be, I promise. Because stripping you out of your clothes is the part I like the most."
"Then.... Maybe just for tonight.... we can skip the surfing and go straight for the stripping?" Kevin offers. Scotty laughs. He had been too tired, but Kevin sure knows how to make him forget about that. He pulls Kevin closer for a kiss. He can taste the red velvet cupcake on Kevin's lips. So sweet. He reaches for the night-light and switches it off. There's been enough talking.
