“What happened?” Scotty asks.
“One night, I got a call from Alex, saying he needed me. And he sounded bad, like he was crying. I drove to his place as quickly as I could and I found him there. His father had beaten him up badly, to a point where I had to drive him to the hospital.

I was in panic and called my own dad and he suggested that Alex would try to get away from his dad. Alex had a grand-mother living near-by. Maybe he could live with her. But she was worried that she couldn't take care of him. In the meantime,  Alex recuperated with us and Mom and Dad were talking to his grandmother.

And then we got an awful message. Alex’s father had died in a fire that burnt their whole house down. They assumed he had fallen asleep after getting drunk and never noticed the fire…..”
“Oh, my God! ... How did Alex react?”

“Strangely numb. I assumed that it was the medication and the beating and the shock…. Anyway, he moved in with his grandma. And quickly enough he was doing better…. And then my life got turned upside down. After long deliberation I came out, not to everyone’s happiness… Alex, however,…. He stood by me, defended me, was a shoulder to cry on, a real friend….”

“Did the two of you….?” Scotty finds it hard to ask the question and wishes he hadn’t when he sees how miserable Kevin looks. Kevin sighs, his shoulders sagging. Kevin nods. He looks incredibly ashamed and Scotty just wants to hold him close and never let him go.

“Just before my 18th birthday… my grandmother gave me 6000 dollar… Cash... In an envelope. … God… What was she thinking…? I had never seen that much money before... Yes, my family wasn’t doing bad financially, but still… Cash! In my hands!.. I took some money and that night Alex and I got completely and totally drunk.” The words become more difficult to Kevin.

“As the night moved on… and he got really drunk… he started to talk. We were having some deep conversation about heaven and hell and he said he was convinced he’d go to hell. I wondered why… Then he told me… his secret…. The burning down of his dad’s house was no accident. Alex had gone to his dad’s house in the middle of the night.

He found his dad sleeping off his drunkenness and he was so filled with anger and hatred that he hit him several times over the head with a frying pan. Then he set the house on fire. He thought he had killed his dad… He didn’t know that his dad was still alive when the house started to burn… or so he said to me.

I was shocked, completely dumbfounded… I did not know what to do. And then he started to cry and I … I just held him. He kept saying that he was sorry, so sorry and my bleeding heart believed him without a doubt… And then he told me once again that I was the best thing in his life and that… that he loved me and then he kissed me….”

Scotty pretends not to see the tears that Kevin angrily brushes away as his voice is filled with anger and self-loathing.
“And I just let him. I loved him too, maybe not as a lover, but what we had was weird, deep, different. And we made love. I gave myself to him completely.

I just wanted to take away his pain. He was my best friend. He made a mistake. He didn’t mean to hurt his dad… Or so I kept telling myself… After making out, he offered me another drink. I don’t remember anything after that…. Except that when I woke up…. my money was gone. And so was he…

He left me a note, explaining that he was really sorry. He didn't want to hurt me anymore, he said, so he left. And that the money came in handy for him. And that my bad head-ache, along with other side effects of the sleeping-pill he put in my drink, would wear off after a while. He was sure of that. He… He thanked me for the sex, saying it was ‘an interesting experience’….

That was the last I heard of him. I heard through the grapevine that he was in Europe. He was often at ‘VIP-parties’ and regularly managed to put his hands on some rich man or woman, on who he would lavish his attention and as soon as he’d find someone richer or easier to swindle out of money, he’d change lover again…. Five years ago he disappeared into obscurity and I hadn’t heard about him since…. Until now.”

“That is quite a story.” Scotty whispers.
“Yes, it’s the red line. There are so many things I could tell you. How he would scam and cheat his way out of situations. That he was charming and funny and that he had a way of just twisting you around his finger. Including my dad.

But he was always honest to me. Brutally honest sometimes. I never saw it coming. I really thought that I was the only one he trusted completely enough and that he would never hurt me. He would lie to anyone, but not me…. I was such a fool.” Kevin shakes his head, unable still to understand how he could have been so blind.

Scotty wraps an arm around him and brings him close for a kiss.
“You are not a fool, Kevin, you are a wonderful man, who wanted to give a man, he thought was his friend a fair chance. It’s not your fault.”
“I’m not so sure about that.” Kevin contradicts between two kisses.
