i'm reading this book about christian orthodoxy, but i'm a little turned off by it because apparently orthodox are basically vegan during lent, and this is their lenten sacrifice. this is viewed as being above and beyond other forms of lenten sacrifice, which i suppose it is, but what am i supposed to do with a belief system that thinks of what i ( Read more... )

most people think of veganism as a burdensome sacrifice. not saying it's right, just that i don't think the religion has anything to do with it.

If veganism is the way you like to go, then good for you. It's like any other diet a person chooses. (And by diet, I mean an every day intake of food, not something fad like Atkins)

I can't imagine it's an easy way to live, foodwise. But, if you found it to be a burdensome sacrifice, I'm sure that you wouldn't do it in the first place.

I think what you should do with the belief system is ignore it. If that's how that group of people choose to celebrate lent, then so be it. But, you can do it on your own, because you want to, and be fine with it. Good for you. I wish I had your discipline, I would probably be a lot healthier!

1. i dream of corning.
2. 2 slices wheat, veganaise on both sides, sprouts, maybe some artichokie, and faux meat of your choice with veganaise in between each layer (or not. i admit to being a sauce girl.)
3. i didn't know that about orthodox christianity. which book are you reading? i have contacts with a few russian orthodox christians...i'd be interested in asking them about it.
4. go to wegmans and buy their tuscan bread. vegan, spicy, SO GOOD. it's made with chili oil, i believe.

love m

personally i never understood religions that involve sacrifice pinpointed on certain days. it's sort of like penis comparison. or martyr complex. enforced empathy.

doesn't make sense to me, though i know some people cherish the practice.

also, i've always believed that spiritual belifs preferably should make one feel cherished, special, and be organic. you can't always find it in books. sometimes it's in water, or pavement. this obviously doesn't work for everyone, by its very nature. :)
