I can't imagine it's an easy way to live, foodwise. But, if you found it to be a burdensome sacrifice, I'm sure that you wouldn't do it in the first place.
I think what you should do with the belief system is ignore it. If that's how that group of people choose to celebrate lent, then so be it. But, you can do it on your own, because you want to, and be fine with it. Good for you. I wish I had your discipline, I would probably be a lot healthier!

2. 2 slices wheat, veganaise on both sides, sprouts, maybe some artichokie, and faux meat of your choice with veganaise in between each layer (or not. i admit to being a sauce girl.)
3. i didn't know that about orthodox christianity. which book are you reading? i have contacts with a few russian orthodox christians...i'd be interested in asking them about it.
4. go to wegmans and buy their tuscan bread. vegan, spicy, SO GOOD. it's made with chili oil, i believe.

doesn't make sense to me, though i know some people cherish the practice.
also, i've always believed that spiritual belifs preferably should make one feel cherished, special, and be organic. you can't always find it in books. sometimes it's in water, or pavement. this obviously doesn't work for everyone, by its very nature. :)
