Letter I wrote to the DC Metro complaints website:
My family and I were trying to exit the Cheverly station at 5:15 with the last fares on our Metro $20 cards. The exit machine on the right side nearest the service booth was broken such that it did not clear the Smartpass amount from the previous customer, but did take the fare off the card without opening the gates. The station mgr. ran another of our cards through the same machine even though I tried to tell him it was broken, and it did the same thing, then told me I needed to put exit fare on the card. I did to two cards, but since the third hadn't been through the machine it had enough for the exit fare and the exit fare machine told me to talk to the station mgr. When I did so, he ran the card through the machine a third time, and finally he realized that the machine was broken as described above. He did not apologize for cutting my explanation off or offer a refund of the $3.20 I needlessly put on the two exit cards, but instead treated my family and myself like we didn't know what we were doing and sent us out of the station.
