Calculus in Latin means "pebbles". Back when they had carriages for hire as taxis in ancient rome, the way they totalled your cost was by a rotating bi-level can, where a pebble would fall through at each rotation of the wheel. At the end they would "calculate" the cost.

I learned that this morning. Ironic :)
