There are several new American students in my French class here that have just arrived for the 2nd semester. At first I was pretending to be too cool to talk to them, but today I had a conversation with one girl. It went like this

Calculus in Latin means "pebbles". Back when they had carriages for hire as taxis in ancient rome, the way they totalled your cost was by a rotating bi-level can, where a pebble would fall through at each rotation of the wheel. At the end they would "calculate" the cost.

I learned that this morning. Ironic :)
