A new lens inspires some entomological dabbling

Sep 11, 2009 20:57

This past Sunday, September 6th, was my thirty-ninth birthday, and I got an Olympus 25mm f/2.8 "pancake" lens for my camera, which turns out to be very good for taking close-up pictures (it was quite willing to focus on a subject only six inches away). On Labor Day, I went to Reynolda Gardens again to try the new lens out. I had intended to just ( Read more... )

Thanks! I'm not so fond of bugs myself, and getting the camera (and thus my face!) less than a foot from all those stingers did cause a few nervous moments. Fortunately, however, most of them were far too busy with the flowers and/or one another to give me much attention.

Thank you! I'm really glad you liked them.

In addition to the new lens, I also got a magnifying eyecup, which just makes it so much easier to focus through the viewfinder, instead of the LCD screen on the back. I hate that damn screen. It's impossibly dim in full sunlight, and although I have a compact camera, my hands still shake a bit when I'm holding it several inches from my face, particularly with a bigger lens attached. This simple little lens, plus the magnifier for my distinctly sub-standard eyes, makes the whole process so much faster, smoother, and more fun.

Wow! Would you mind if I showed these to my high school bio students later on in the year?

No, I wouldn't mind in the slightest -- indeed, I'm flattered. Please feel free to put them to good use!

Those shots are AMAZING. Well done.

But, don't let the pancake lens police find out. You're really only supposed to take pictures of pancakes with it. :)

mmm....pancakes....

That second one with the bee hovering over the petal-less flower -- that looks like a microphone. It's Bee Karaoke night!

Wow..I'm loopy today, and I haven't even taken any cold meds yet. Oh, this is going to be an interesting day. :)

No problemo. :) I know awesome photos when I see them (even if I have no idea how to take them myself...)
