A visit to the Met

Nov 29, 2009 15:42

I went to the Met this past Friday. I did, indeed, see the Japanese arms and armor, but I made the mistake of wandering around the ancient Egyptian and medieval European exhibits first, so by the time I got there I was already getting tired and footsore, and "all photographed out." Here are thumbnail versions of some of the pictures which I did ( Read more... )

Thanks for the lovely pictures.

So it was a good experience, then?

I'm really glad you enjoyed the pictures! It was a good experience, but it had an odd "waking dream" quality to it, since I didn't have a map of the museum with me, and was thus wandering around within each of the exhibits I visited more or less at random (but I was, I should add, okay with that). Moreover, all the while I had this strong sense of looking "for" something in particular, but I couldn't quite say what it was. The expressions of the little figurines got closest to it -- that odd mix of hopefulness and melancholy -- but perhaps I'm retrospectively making too much of that aspect of the trip.

give yourself some time to process your trip. maybe what you were looking for is in there somewhere, but the weariness of travel is still on you.

Glad you had a good time! I always get lost in that museum.

I am ashamed to admit that one of the first things that popped into my head when I saw that furious-looking waterspout was "Hey, that could be a great LiveJournal user icon!" (and when I showed it to my wife, she had much the same reaction).

I always get lost in that museum.

At some point the charm of wandering around inside an Egyptological kaleidoscope get begin to wear thin, and I thought to myself "y'know, this place would really benefit from something like GPS."

I'm glad you liked them.

I go up to New Jersey a couple of times a year to visit family, and try to get a trip to the City into the schedule whenever it's feasible. I never get to do as much as I would like to do, but it makes living in central North Carolina a little bit more bearable.
