I do like me some Hopkins. However, at my high school, we had to recite this one poem of his at the beginning of each AP English class & I grew to HATE that poem so much. I can't even think of the title now, but I know one of the lines was "to the glory of God." Anyway, I think it made me never, ever want to ever speak a line of Hopkins again, for sure.

why oh why do terrible teachers have to ruin poetry for people? this summer i found out a friend -detested- adrienne rich (!) due to the way she was taught. it saddens me, just like when i hear people rant about how evil their school librarians were.

The smartest lit guy I ever knew would read us Hopkins and finish by saying, "Ah, who the hell knows what he's saying? But it's beautiful."
