in other news, i read vox nova because sometimes it's interesting (like recent posts on the danger of conflating religion & patriotism) and because sometimes it pisses me off, which is fun. i'm not gonna lie.

like tonight, in a post about high school kids & minimum wage:

The only thing I'm really convinced of is the social teaching that free men ( Read more... )

Action figures and all.

Especially if your action figures are in positions that would not meet your mother's standards of decency.

For it being a Catholic site I'm really confused why they think those without children should either be a religious or they are just selfish. Once again they biggest problem I have with this kind of thinking is you never know who doesn't have kids by choice and who really would like children but isn't able to have them. To make such statements is rediculously hurtful to those who are unable to have them. Not that I think those who just don't want kids are being selfish but they tend to be a bit thicker skinned about things ( ... )

$8.00?!

I thought I hit the jackpot when I had neighbors who would pay be $20 for babysitting their twins (let's see, that was usually from 6:00 to 12:00, so about $3.33/hr).

Even minimum wage isn't close to $8.00 (at least around here). Hell, I made $10.00/hr working for three years with a college degree (granted, it was in poetry, but still ;-)

i usually got $5/hour, but i was a regular for a family with three boys, and a well-off family raising their two grandchildren.

i think at $7.93/hour washington has the highest minimum wage in the country.

Here in Seattle minimum wage is right at or just under $8 an hour. I can't remember the exact amount but if it's less than $8 it's within 50 cents ( ... )

-seriously-. which reminds me of one of my favorite of dan savage's points in regards to gay parents... it's not like you can get drunk & adopt.

I was being a tad sarcastic in the comment. I probably shouldn't have posted it, because it has obviously detracted from the post. For the record, I don't subscribe to the notion of a single's vocation, but there are folks who do, and there is plenty of room within Catholic teaching for such a view ( ... )

In case you were wondering, sir, I have never met a person who didn't have children because they wanted to enjoy more spending money. The concept of bringing a life into the world and being responsible for shaping it is completely separate from "we want a big screen TV". There are people who wait until they are more financially stable (ahem, like my husband and me), but no one says "I don't want to have kids because I want the money for myself." They say "I don't want to have kids because I DON'T WANT TO HAVE KIDS."
