i'm not sure i can help you with picking a particular camera (mine is a digital rebel, i paid $600 used...) but i'd definitely suggest you don't ignore the used camera idea. you can get a lot more for your money that way.
our new camera cost i think 250, and i love it, much better than our old one. it's a kodak easyshare c643, w/ 6.1 megapixels. it has lots of picture settings (close up, landscape, night, party, beach, snow, fireworks, self-portrait, backlight, and night). it also has video capabilities & depending on the size of your memory card you can take small videos. i have a 512mb card in our camera and i can take up to 18 minutes of video. i'm casting my vote for the camera i have!!
I have a good camera that can get artsy without the heavy price tag!stoner_witchOctober 17 2006, 04:32:25 UTC
Canon PowerShot S2 IS. I got this camera last February and although it's been replaced on the market by the S3, it's still a good camera to find inexpensively used. Even brand new, I've noticed a few of them going for as little at $270! You can get kind of artsy-fartsy with it, if you like, or use it as a simple point an shoot. It's got the features, many of which I don't even fuck with.
And, yeah, AF895 is correct in advising you to kill your digital zoom.
I have a Nikon CoolPix3200. it's got 3.2 megapixels, which is really all you need. I don't think they make that model anymore though. if you decide to go with Nikon, don't get the L4, or L anything- that series isn't all that great. as for zoom, most digital cameras don't have fantastic zoom quality (that I know of. but I'm sure that they've developed something awesome since I bought mine). hope this helps a little! good luck with the hunt!
