An Unconvenient Hankering is the story of Sam and Hank who have been best friends since high school. When Sam can’t deny anymore he is gay and has a huge crush on Hank who is a straight stud he moves on and gets a job in Denver. After a few years he wants to come home and makes a rather stupid decision: Out of convenience he moves in with Hank - until he can’t deny anymore that this makes his life miserable because his crush develops to be much more. Sure that there will be nothing he can do about it one afternoon he decides to move again. Desperate and mentally burnt out by everything he falls asleep in Hank’s room…
This is the second short story of Sienna Bishop (aka
sienata ) published on www.dreamspinnerpress.com/fictionbyauthor.htm#Sienna_Bishop
There has been another review
reviewsbyjessewave.blogspot.com/search/label/sienna%20bishop which panned her for it and S! herself isn’t all happy about it either as you perhaps read on her blog
sienata.livejournal.com/134422.html#cutid1.
For one Hank and Sam having a lot of het sex during their college time was an issue in the other review. When I was at high school I had 3 gay friends - though I didn't know then :). They had unbelievingly many girls in their beds before they came out!! And I’m quite sure it wasn’t only for playing cards to pass the night. So I think acting straight to cover you are actually gay may happen and maybe isn’t so difficult to do as long as you are young and have a lot of testosterones running through your system.
Considering S! being an e-pal who gave me a lot of wonderful hours with her outstanding stories on the BBM fandom I would have bought her story anyway because I want to support my friends and if it is only by spending 3.99 $ to buy their published e books after getting so much more for free.
Apart from that the story IS worth reading!
I have to admit that it isn’t S!’s best story, it isn’t as spirited and vivid as her BBM stories which is a little bit sad because she really can do better and it would have been great for her if people outside of our fandom could see that from the very start.
I think the main problem is S! telling a whole decade of a developing relationship on 65 pages. To get a shape in characters and put depth in a story when you have to tell ten years of two lives in a short story is almost impossible to do.
But anyway it IS a sienata story and I don’t have to tell you it still is outstanding, enjoyable and so much fun to read. Especially when Sam moves in with Hank you can be sure that S! has a way to describe their relationship to our pure delight
I’m not the only one who likes this story: Since it had been released the novel is on the bestseller list of dreamspinner and if the mentioning place indicates the rank it climbed from no 5 to no 4. And after almost 3 weeks of being released I guess words would have got around if the story wasn’t worth reading.
So I highly recommend to give the novel a try.
