Today I want to highly recommend a story of the BDSM universe I recently read: Puppy Love by Jeff Erno
http://eu.nifty.org/nifty/gay/college/puppy-love/ Petey is a 19 year old small shy boy who has a crush on Matt who has been his walking wet dream for 4 years. One day Petey is attacked and Matt comes to his help. A little later they meet again: Matt is walking his new little dog and when Petey crouches down in front of Matt to pet it his world begins to shift: He feels great kneeling in front of Matt, that’s what feels right for him. Matt picks up on this feeling and soon they are in a relationship: Petey becomes Matt’s “Pup”.
It is very different to all Dom/sub stories I ever read because Petey neither is a sub from one day to another and nor is this a - Let’s get into a scene and I’ll spank you - story. Petey is submissive and wants a relationship with a leader, an Alpha - male. This story is not about equals who willingly decide that they live a Dom/sub life with a contract and a safe word. This is the story about a young man who realizes that he is submissive and the only way to happiness is to serve his master, obey and do whatsoever he is told to do. He wonders a lot what makes him crave to serve Matt and even longing for being “owned” by him, he questions if it can be right to live this lifestyle. It scares him, especially as he is very unsecure about Matt’s feelings for him, if this can work out, if he can endure to obey even when it breaks his heart.
The story is told in first person. Some people aren’t very fond of that but for this story it is perfect. Jeff Erno uses this POV to give us a sometimes gut wrenching inside of Petey, his hopes, his fears, his struggle to accept his personality and his longing for Matt.
But what make this story so vivid are the interactions with the other characters around Petey:
First there is his sister Kathie who loves Petey dearly. She has no problem when she finds out he is gay, but she is determined to let him see Matt is no good for him and when she finds out about or at least gets a glimpse of their true relationship she freaks. She is like everybody who is not living a Dom/sub relationship: Horrified how her brother’s only goal can be to please Matt. She desperately tries to make him see that he doesn’t have to take Matt’s decisions, that he should stand up against him - not understanding at all why Petey can’t do it and - more important - doesn’t want to do it.
Then there is Drew. He is a little older than Petey and lives in a Dom/sub relationship for already 4 years. He is a sub, too and he helps Petey to understand his feelings and to understand the actions of Matt, why Petey should trust in Matt and not always question his actions even when Petey is crushed and heartbroken by these very actions. He helps Petey to accept his life as a sub.
Alex is Drew’s Master and becomes Matt’s best friend. Jeff uses his character to show that there is a wide range between Dom and sub, that nothing is only black or white.
There are a lot of other characters, either like Kathie trying to get Petey out of this relationship or the ones supporting him or being a pain in his ass like Tracey - Matt’s girlfriend - or Ryan, who doesn’t hide he got the hots for Matt and openly hits on him in the very presence of Petey.
And of course - there is Matt. Petey’s Master and Owner, the love of his life, the one who can take him to pure bliss or can turn his life upside down and make it a living hell. And that’s so unique about this story: Matt doesn’t influence Petey’s life by canes, chains and whips. You will find very few items you are used to when reading about a Dom/sub relationship. Don’t get me wrong - there are a lot of really steaming hot sex and lovemaking scenes and there is a whole lot of kink involved. But Matt likes to let loose Petey’s demons when he is going to punish him: For example the last chapter stopped when Matt told Petey what he has to do because he back-mouthed Alex: Petey has to spend a day with Ryan, the person he dislikes most. And of course Petey has to be respectful though Matt knows his animosity towards Ryan very well.
Matt is a master in playing Petey’s soul and heart like an instrument, he is manipulating him by using Petey’s fears for punishing him. So the story shows how Petey’s insecurities have the biggest impact on him. They make his live miserable in the first place. The funny thing is: Jeff succeeds in leading us readers on. You will endure the same feelings like Petey, being sure Matt is a cold, heartless guy who uses Petey without even thinking about how much he hurts him. There was more than once when I thought I can’t go on reading because I felt the things Matt was doing to Petey were too much to bear. And then it went on and there was a slight change and I could see that for their relationship it was another step to build up trust, to ensure Petey, to make him stronger.
Believe me: Matt’s character makes you yearn for big boots to kick his ass more than once or twice. And that’s another amazing thing about this story: Jeff is such a great and gifted writer, you really get the feeling his characters are your next door neighbors and you CAN go and kick Matt’s ass.
You know me, I’m a big sucker for love stories. So you can be sure Matt is not what he seems to be at the beginning of the story: A big jock, only interested in his own pleasure. His character is so much deeper.
So give this story a try, it is one of the best I ever read in this section.
