Really?? From whom?? From everything I heard while I was there, he's an absolute nim-wit. He's got no idea how to conduct himself politically and is putting Honduras at even more of a disadvantage with almost every move. For instance, when he was invited to the White House for a business meeting with Bush, he brought 30 members of his family, including a grandchild, whom he gave to Bush in order for there to be a photo taken. Ok, not such a huge deal, perhaps. But, in comparison, the president of Chile (a woman, by the way), took a handful of political advisors and officials with her to a similar meeting. Maybe some people are hopeful about Mel because Maduro was pretty ineffectual. There's also the fact that tons of Hondurans were very much against Pepe, the guy who ran against Mel, because he wanted to reinstate the death penalty, which is pretty much political suicide there.
Thus exhausts my knowledge of Honduran politics. But I'm interested to hear what you've heard about Mel.
