Oddly enough, I had something similar happen to me today. Two of my students came up to me and said, "We missed the last two quizzes." They didn't finish their whole thought. What they meant to say is "Teacher, we missed almost all of your classes, obviously attending class is boring so why would we do that, but we missed your quizzes so that means our grade will be lowered, and well, we don't like that, so... how are you going to make us get good grades, teacher?"
