Armoire à deux corps (cupboard on chest) 17 век
The carved decoration of this armoire displays unusual exuberance and virtuosity. Its structure is characteristic of French armoires of the Renaissance and the first half of the seventeenth century: two separate sections and four doors. The relief work was carved after engravings by Bartolomeus Spranger and Marten de Vos. The piece thus reveals the links between Prague artists and French artists via engraving.

Pierre Gole (c. 1620-1684)
Parisian 'cabinetmakers working in ebony' in the first half of the seventeenth century developed a piece of furniture which was based on Flemish and German cabinets. Their method was quite different, but the element of surprise remained unchanged: as in the theater, the cabinet concealed a sumptuous scene behind a sober exterior. In the same way, cabinets veneered with ebony on the outside opened up to reveal creations of precious materials on the inside.
'Anne of Austria's' chest
Mid-seventeenth century
Anne of Austria (?); listed in the Crown Collection in 1729
A chest decorated with gold filigree
The chest stands on four lion's paws on circular pads. The lid is slightly domed and the piece has a gold handle at each end. The front face is fitted with a lock. Consisting of a wooden case entirely covered with blue satin, the chest has openwork decoration, like gold netting, inspired essentially by plants. The flowers include tulips, sunflowers, and French marigolds arranged harmoniously in luxuriant foliage and stem patterns. The blue satin is visible through the openwork decoration.

Armoire said to be by Hugues Sambin
The decorations on this highly architectural piece of furniture include bas-reliefs, scupture in the round, and painted panels. It has often been compared to the work of the architect and ornamentalist Hugues Sambin (circa 1520-1601). Although some features do seem to be inspired by his architectural style, other sources, in particular those of Fontainebleau, have contributed to the creation of this armoire, which is very representative of sixteenth-century furniture.
