Narrow Escapes in Literature

Today's topic is: Narrow Escapes in Literature.

And by Narrow Escapes, I mean, namesYesterday, whilst poking around in some Sherlock (TV series) fics, I learned a shuddering new fact concerning the good doctor. This shudder led to other horrors I was equally incapable of mentally screening out, until I had composed a cringe-worthy list that ( Read more... )

Yes, Trotter and Bingo, leaders of the Fellowship. I wonder how many copies that would have sold?

SO glad to have my time back. I'm still not ready to write, apparently, but the dreams have started again, so I expect it won't be long.

Thanks for the kind words!

Congrats on new working situation, I'm so happy for you.

I for one have always thought that Bingo would have been far superior to Frodo. Think of the dramatic possibilities! The pathos! The nobility! Old JRRT really screwed the pooch when he went with Frodo ...

*pomegranate juice up nose!!!* :D :D :D

I'm enjoying your book reports. I wish I was organized enough to do that, but I'm not. Still, maybe your example will rub off someday.

Heh. Pooch.

I'm getting my energy back, and equally as important, my dreams.

YES! I'm so glad you're in a better spot. 18 months is QUITE long enough in hell.

Man, it's been hard! I am so grateful to have been working through this economic depression, but it's tough to be in a soul-sucking place. I'm very glad to be out of it. A friend pointed out this job. Friends are good. :)

Oh Mariole -- I'm so glad to hear about your new job and that you are feeling so much better for it! *hugs you*

I knew about "April" being the original name for Pike, but I didn't know about "January". I think Roddenberry was fond of Romanesque names, considering that Kirk's middle name was Tiberius...

I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures of your trip, especially those of Norfolk, a place I've often thought of visiting but have never been to.

I had SUCH a good time on my trip. I was so ready to see someplace new, and thanks to my very good friends (hugs them tightly), I was able to do it. More of that in its proper place.

Some of the potential captain names were pretty dreadful, in my opinion. There's a little list in my book. Other rejects (thank goodness) include Raintree, Boone, Timber, and Hannibal.

I am so grateful for rough drafts that go through editing...

*gloms* So nice to see your name pop up in my flist again!

I knew some of those. Sherrinford and Ormond! (Yikes!) Although there have been parodies that have had fun with those names...

Didn't know April and January though. Can you imagine what Spock would have been like if his name was "May"?

Ormond. Ormond Sacker! O_o

"Holmes!"

"Yes, Sacker." O_o

I have a book of Sherlock parodies, and every author makes a different pun of his name. It's really amazing. But Ormond. Ormond! O_o

> Can you imagine what Spock would have been like if his name was "May"?

Or "June". Our K/S friends would have been off and running from episode 1.

There's a fairly hilarious discussion (interdepartmental memos) in my "Making of Star Trek" book about Planet Vulcan Proper Names. Among some of the hilarious contenders for Spock's relatives are Spook, Splik, Spask, and Sponk. Sarek can thank the TV gods that two-syllable names were invented before he made his debut.

-- It's good to see you, too. I'm sad that my Holmes and Watson icons are way down in my icon list (I'm overdrawn), and I can't get to them. I really enjoyed the 3 Sherlock episodes for the new BBC series. Very cleverly done! Have you had a chance to see it?
