Before the concert

This year I was lucky that one of my friends got tickets to Arashi's 5x20 live tour, and offered to take me with her.
I am so grateful to be able to attend this concert. This is my first time at a concert and I'm so glad that it was their 20th anniversary concert. It was the best 3.5 hours of my life!! Three years ago when I got into the Arashi fandom I saw the disc of Arashi in Miyagi and I could not believe how big the concert was and how cool all the special effects were. When I got more into Arashi, I made it my dream to be able to see their concert. Even if it was just once in my life, I wanted to hold their penlight among other fans and convey my "Thank you" to them for always making our lives one step easier.

So when I heard that my friend got tickets and we were going to see Arashi, I honestly couldn't believe it and didn't quite register properly. How could I possibly see them for real? The same guys that I see on concert DVDs and doing ridiculous stuff on their TV shows. Even though this was something I've been longing for 3 years, I never thought I would see them so soon. I know how difficult to win tickets and on average I expected to have to wait 5-7 years. It was too good to be true. I kept thinking what if I can't meet them, what if something happens suddenly and I won't be able to see them...

Anyway, so today I went to Sapporo dome with my friends at around 12pm to buy concert goods first. I wore a grey shirt and green skirt and jacket, and I even bothered my sister to do my make up for me cos for once I actually do care how I look tonight just in case on the offchance Arashi might actually see me.

When we got to Sapporo dome, we went up the stairs to the area where they were selling goods. At that time, there were really not too many people. Compared to Tokyo dome last year when people lined up all out onto the streets, this was nothing in comparison. There were a few rows zigzagging across which we passed quickly, but then the lining up closer to the stand took a while. I think we were probably lining up for about 1-2 hours. I wanted to treat this as a once in a lifetime experience so I bought most of the goods. I'm so happy that the limited charm was purple! ^_^ I overdid it a bit and now I've busted my spending limit on this trip. Oh well ^_^ After we bought the goods, we went to have a quick dinner and then back to the dome and lined up to enter. The dome was crowded with people when we were entering!

We entered the south gate, and got our tickets. Our seat was unfortunately not arena seats, but it was a good seat. It was somewhere in the middle of the stands, but we had a straight on view of the screen and stage. The advantage of having a stand seat I think is that you can see all the penlights and it is very beautiful. It's hard to see Arashi in detail from the stands when they're far away, but if they came to the closer stage, it's pretty decent and I could see all their beautiful faces and movements ^_^

My memory of the concert itself I think is pretty shocking. I think I was too riled up to remember things in detail. I wish I can write a photographic concert report like the ones I read >.< Please forgive me if I write anything that is inaccurate. I'll do my best!! Because I don't want to ever forget this day myself.

First the screen has 5x20 Anniversary tour on it before the show started with some Western music playing in the background. I screamed when I saw 5x20 written across the screen. It was one big screen and 2 small screens on either side. There was also a bit of VS arashi and shiyagare and advertising of Aiba's drama in the mini screens. When I entered it I thought it was so big!! I've never been to such a big place before. We synced our penlights to the dome. As more people came in, the dome started to fill up with all different colours and it was so beautiful. I couldn't believe I was among this sea of Arashi fanlights. I want to remember that scenery forever <3.

So we counted down the minutes. Something unbelievable happened at 2-3 mins before the concert. My uchiwa that I made, when I took it out the part that I glued down had peeled off! Luckily I had bought some Arashi masking tape so I used it to stick it down. I made it on time before the concert started!

This is our view from the stands. The picture doesn't convey how big this place is! It is so much bigger in real life!!!!! So many people! It's the biggest place I've ever been to!

The actual concert

The concert started with a loud sound and the lights turned off suddenly. I think the penlights also turned off at first. The opening screen was their names and faces on a monochrome background, coming up individually looking cool. Then the intro of Kansha Kangeki Ame Arashi started playing and we all screamed. What a beautiful song to start off with! They did it for 5x10 so I didn't expect it to also be the opening song for 5x20 as well but it was a pleasant surprise. Then Arashi appeared in red costumes on top of the screen that says 5x20. They were so small and far away! When there voices started to sing the song, I cried. I think it's the overwhelming feeling that I have finally meeting these guys that I love so much, and hearing their raw voices and we were in the same place together. I love Kansha Kangeki, it's such a beautiful song. Then all of a sudden, they somehow got from that high area above the screen to down on the stage. We sang along at some parts. I think they only sang the short version. Everyone was smiling brightly. To be honest I don't remember too much of what else happened in this song. I spent the first 30 seconds crying :')

The second song was Oh Yeah! I love this song it's just so fun to dance to in a concert ^_^. I'm glad they sang this song! I love the part where we're all waving our hands in the air, and the lyrics are "Put your hands up higher, we are singing and supporting this earth". We were dancing and singing along and it was so fun!!
Arashi's voices were all so strong and loud and blended in well with each other. It's different from the recordings, and a bit echoey with the microphones but it's proof that they are singing live for us with all their strength. Ohno's voice was beautiful as usual. Aiba and Sakurai's voice were both pretty good too! Nino's voice was actually quite soft and got muffled by the microphone so it was hard to hear sometimes. Matsujun's voice initially was loud and deep and actually sounded really good when he sang his first solo line. I was surprised! (maybe I'm biased :P). Towards the end, it was still loud but became squeaky >_< But I love him for it!! They're singing live for 3.5 hours anyway.

This was followed by Step and Go which was fun and upbeat. Then came Kotoba Yori Taisetsu na mono. I really liked this song. I think the penlights were a nice red colour. It was a song that was fun to sing along and I like the part where Sho held out his microphone, and we all screamed “Aru kara!”

Then came the greetings from each member ^_^ The greetings were similar to the ones they did for every concert. But hearing it in real life and their voices so raw was beautiful and emotionally overwhelming, and I started to cry again when Matsujun did his greeting, especially the part when he says thank you to each and every single person that has gathered here tonight. A thank you said so early in the concert:’) I wonder if it’s just me, or did I completely miss Matsujun’s usual greeting of “We’re going to make 50 000 people  here happy” in the midst of everything?? I wanted to hear that!!
Nino did his “Irasshaimase” greeting. Aiba did his cute greeting, and he gave us his funny attempt of a wink at the end where he screws his face up ^_^
Then Ohno’s “Hey” greeting, then Sakurai’s greeting of all the fans, the upper stands, arena, male fans, female fans and all together. Then we all screamed “Arashi” together at the end and it was really really fun!

The next song was Find the Answer, Arashi’s voice was pretty during this song. My favourite bit is when the spotlight goes on for Ohno and Matsujun’s harmony ^_^ They sounded really good and balanced. There were no back dancers, we didn’t get all the people dressed in black.

Then I’ll Be There started off with a video in monochrome with a mysterious theme. Arashi was wearing cloaks, and hats and were in the middle of doing something when they suddenly disappeared into thin air leaving only their clothing behind. It continued until all Arashi members had disappeared. Then, on stage, Aiba appeared, and had a small dance section by himself before all the other members joined in and the music for I’ll Be There started. They looked very cool in this performance. This song was pretty popular with the fans. We tried to dance to the part where Arashi does the finger pointing. The movements were pretty hard!

Next song was Meikyuu Love Song which I’m glad they decided to sing as it’s been a while. The background was different patterns which fit the maze theme I guess. Their voices were lovely in this. I like the part of the choreography at the end where they put their hands together <3

La Tormenta 2004 was the next song which again was pleasantly surprised and glad that they sang this. This is their member introduction song that was sung lots in their old concerts. Sakurai introduced Matsujun who introduced Aiba-chan, who introduced Nino, then Ohno then Sakurai. And then we screamed the names of each of the members after they were introduced. My favourite part was when Ohno joined in in his introduction and says “Oh-chan da”. Then Breathless and Everything were sung, which was very popular. The lights and effects for Breathless were really good with lots of flashing lights and light beams.

Next song was Hatenai Sora. I’m really glad they sung this song too. It's one of my favourites but I thought they might not sing this song because it is a bit sad but hopeful song. This song was beautifully sung. I think the penlights as this point were glowing a lovely light pink colour, and the stage was decorated with flowers <3

Next was Sho-kun’s segment, one of my favourite performances of the concert. It was dark and there was a spotlight on him. As he walked across the stage, the light then fell on a piano on the side of the stage and everyone screamed so much!! I also couldn’t believe that we were gonna see Sho-chan play piano. I only recall a few other times when Sho-kun played piano and they were all for significant events or memories. Sho-chan playing piano is a precious moment! I can’t believe we will continue to see him playing piano for the rest of this tour! He played a really nice melody that I didn’t recognize. On the screen it flashed to a video of him playing piano when he was a child <3 I thought his finger movements looked pretty strong and skilled, but apparently he was shaking.
Then there were some gold sparkles on the left side of the stage screen and the other 4 appeared next to him and the piano.  They had changed clothes. The music transitioned to Aozora Pedal and Arashi sang the slow version of Aozora Pedal beautifully. The harmonies!!
Then, in the middle Sho stopped playing and turned to the audience and asked if we could join them!! He looked so cute when he turned around and asked us to join in! Sho gave us our starting note “Asu..” but he gave a really high note and it came out squeaky >_<
Arashi pointed their microphones at us. The part they got us to sing was “Asu wo mabushii kurai ni umaku egakou toshite, bokura wa kirei na iro wo nurisugita mitai”
This means “Even if we tried to paint tomorrow skillfully and brightly, it seems like we pained it which many colours. There were lyrics on the screen to help. I wonder why they chose this song and this line in particular. I thought they would let us sing either A.RA.SHI or Kansha Kangeki, but Aozora Pedal??!! They haven’t sung this song on recent concerts either. It really sounded so beautiful when everyone’s voices joined together. It was like one big choir that was united, Arashi also looked pretty happy with us. Then Arashi joined in with the next bit. “Chotto kakkowarui koto mo kowareta yume no iro mo, parette ni hiroge mou ichido asu wo egakou” - “Even the uncool things and the colour of our broken dreams, let’s open the palette and repaint tomorrow again”. At this point, Arashi had sat down on the stage to sing. I love it when they sit down to sing. It feels casual yet their expressions convey a lot of emotions. At this point Nino also became teary which is a really rare scene to see. I wonder what he was feeling? It was just the most beautiful thing. Sho on piano, Arashi sitting on stage singing, everyone’s voices together, the beautiful lyrics our our penlights glowing patterns of red and pink throughout the entire dome. I can’t forget how beautiful it was, and for me it was a special moment we all shared with Arashi inside that stadium. <3

Next was Fukkatsu Love. The screen initially showed a big picture of Toma’s face and everyone went crazy. The screen during this song was a love story with Toma and a girl. During the song I was thinking “Is this even allowed in Johnny’s?”. We also got to hear Matsujun’s sexy “I miss you”, and Aiba’s “Okaeri” Both were pretty short though.

Believe was a cool song and dance. The penlights here had lots of quick flashing lights and light beams I think. Next was Lucky Man which was a super fun song, all of us screaming “Man!”. I think it was this song (but maybe I’m confusing it with Kitto Daijoubu”, when on the screen the PV Arashi was dressed in tight gymnastic like clothing in their member colours, and puffy hair and wiggling their hips. It was hilarious! It reminds me of Nice na kokoroiki in an old concert.

Next they sang Ai wo Sakebe. In this song, Arashi had made it to the front block of the stage was in the place where I could see them best. At the beginning of it, Arashi were like “Where should we shoot?” and looked around, and then they all turned forward and all 5 of them shot directly to the front in our direction!!! I was dying!!
The dance moves of Ai wo Sakebe were so cute and we all danced along, and I’m so glad I got see them close up for this pointing their fingers, moving their hips, and Jun linking the love knot between Nino and Aiba??

Natsu Hayate was beautifully sung, a gentle but grand song. I think the stage screen and penlights were a sky blue colour.

The next part was there MC. Half time went by so quickly!! The MC was longer than what we usually see in the recorded concerts, I think it went for about 30-40 mins. Once again they introduced themselves “Arashi desu~!” So cute! Even though they everyone already knows who they are. Jun was off stage for a bit earlier on in the MC. They talked about a lot of topics. They was lots of touching, and gyaa moments for pairings! Especially Sakuraiba. They talked about how Aiba’s pants fell of during the first part of the show, and Sakurai trying to be helpful tried to pull his pants up for him but instead put his hands under Aiba’s pants ;D
Sho and Aiba were both giggling so much, and had the biggest smile and it was adorable, and they looked so happy :’) Then Aiba and Ohno talked about sweets club. Ohno complaining that Aiba didn’t eat any sweets today and left him eating alone. So they decided that they will start eating together from tomorrow. Then Jun came back to stage with a change of clothes and 5x20 wrapped around him looking all sweaty. I’ve noticed every concert that at halftime, Jun needs to change and get a towel and get a drink or snack. He must have exhausted himself so much putting his all into the performance :’)
Then they introduced their recent activities.
Sho talked about him hosting the Rugby, and hosting Kouhaku. I think when he started talking everyone was thinking Kouhaku, but he was like “No no” and started talking about the Rugby first. Matsujun talked about having come to Hokkaido many times during his filming of the new NHK drama, and also he went there privately too. His offered a message to the victims of the Hokkaido earthquake and asked us to look forward his drama. He said it’s “Coming soon” in English ^_^
Aiba talked about his current drama Shippo. He was wondering, will the fans here make it home on time tonight to watch it and concluded that we would.
Nino … I can’t remember what Nino talked about..? My impression was that Nino didn’t say very much.
When Ohno was asked what he did recently, he said he cut his hair :’D. And the other guys were all like, “No not something that you did privately”. And he giggled cutely. The camera zoomed into the back of Ohno’s head where he cut it. I don't know much about haircuts but it looked fine to me ^_^
Then they talked about how with the recent electronic tickets we don’t get a physical copy of the tickets, so they wanted to take a picture here at the dome to replace that. They stood with their hands over each other’s shoulders in front of the 5x20 red background and a staff came to take the photo. The camera zoomed into their faces. They were smiling so widely, they were so close and cuddly their faces almost touching :D I remember their faces there clearly. Jun teased us saying he might send it to us later tonight and to keep a look out for it. It didn’t come until about 3 days later, but I’m grateful to be able to have that photo as a memory. It’s now my phone lockscreen, and it has Sapporo dome 11/16 at 18:00 written on it too ^_^
Then they took turns to go and get changed.
I’m glad I could see them talking about random things, and laughing and giggling like they usually do when they’re on TV. They looked like they were having so much fun. It’s so Arashi-like, and it’s what I love them for. There were times when a two of them (e.g. Sakuraiba) were laughing at each other and the others just looked on them with a gentle gaze. They looked like they were having the most fun out of everyone, and despite whatever the audience’s reaction is they looked like they would still have fun in their own world. I strongly thought that while I watched them and it really made me feel calm and relieved, and was heartwarming to watch. Arashi just being Arashi. Jun mentioned it in the MC the following day, how he was looking at the other members having so much fun, and thought to himself, “Well if they’re happy I’m happy too.”

After the MC was Matsujun’s section. He came out in a white suit and conducted the orchestra!! His focused expression is so cool and handsome!! I can’t believe we got to see both Sho play piano and Matsujun conduct. It reminds me of 24 hour TV when they both did a great job. Matsujun’s performance was flawless. They played Wish instrumental, and a few other songs too that I can’t remember,

The opening song of the second half was Cool and Soul. This is not one of my favourite songs but I know back in the day Arashi really liked it. I think it’s the song they released after they went on a bit of a break when Aiba got a pneumothorax. I’m happy they sang it anyway.

Then came My Girl, I love this song! I believe Arashi were standing and singing this song, pen lights were light green or light orange? Beautiful melody! ^_^ The message of thanks was strong.

Then we got to hear One Love and see the cute choreography ^_^ I love it!! This is my first Arashi performance that I saw on youtube before I became a fan. We got to hear Matsujun’s multiple solo parts!! ^_^ It sounded pretty good actually! It wasn’t too high pitched like the performances when he was younger. He’s getting better!!!! <3 :’)

Then came Ohno’s dance segment. It looked like Ohno was using a sword to fight off something. Ohno’s dance was coordinated with the light beams in the dome, so it looked like when he swung the sword the light beams were cutting through the dome, or like when he would throw light beams towards the audience. Ohno’s dance is so cool!! So much accuracy to be able to coordinate like that!

Face Down was also a big favourite! Arashi was dressed in red costumes at this point, and this performance had fire coming up from the stage and everyone screamed! Arashi looked very cool here! Tsunagu was also pretty cool too. That Ohno choreographed bit where they’re on the ground and Jun and Ohno come through and their fingers!! >_<
Crazy Moon was the next song. I haven’t heard this for a while. Unusual choice! Sakura was a dance performance, I think the setting of this performance was pretty dark. Then Truth came, everyone screamed!! This song was really popular! My image of this performance is red and black, and Arashi dancing and being sexy! >_<

Then the screen showed Arashi’s journey and all their albums and singles through 20 (19 years). It was very colourful with lots of pictures of cartoon buildings and sceneries with their singles on them. It started with this year, and then went backwards, and we saw clips of their old PVs too. Then it stopped on the first single A.RA.SHI.

The next song was A.RA.SHI!! This performance is definitely one of my favourites in the concert!!! Arashi were dressed in colourful bright 5x20 jackets. Super song fun with everyone joining in!! :D On the screen it showed A.RA.SHI pv and then there was this year’s remake of A.RA.SHI pv!!!!!! They were in the same studio, wearing the same white jackets and doing the same moves and same expressions!! At some point, I think the screen split to compare the 2 pvs!! It was so cute!!! Arashi making all the same faces they did 19 years ago!! Matsujun’s dorky grin, Ohno’s bored face and Nino’s slightly pissed off face!!!! This is gold!! I really hope they release that PV!!!! I would love a collection of all of their old PV remakes!! At the end, they gathered at the centre of the stage, and sang the harmony bit. I thought that Ohno would give his mic to us for part of the harmony but he didn’t ;D On the screen it showed the PV. They were standing with the same pose and had the same expressions as the PV!!! Thank you for this Arashi!! :’D

The next song was A day in our life. Hehe I knew they were gonna sing this song. This song is actually one of my least favourite songs but it was fun screaming then “way, ue, ne, someday” bits. We screamed a lot!

Hadashi no mirai was great!! Arashi were spread out around the dome for this one! I love the dance moves, it’s so cute!! Jun-kun was in the section in front of us and directed our moves!! <3 For Sakura Sake, I think they made their way back to the centre stage. I think on the screen there were clips of Sakura Sake pv! ^_^ Kitto Daijoubu.. now this is the song that I don’t know if I’m mistaking it with Lucky Man. There was one where the screen showed Arashi dressed in tight gym clothings and wiggling around. Either way both were great performances!!
Monster performance had fire going off around the stage, and a background screen of a clock. Troublemaker was really fun!! JUMP!! JUMP!! JUMP!! There was no one behind me so I could jump as much as I liked!! I think it was probably this song, where at the end there were fireworks on either side of the stage. It was yellow/gold fireworks, not very big but we all screamed anyway :D Wild at Heart was next, also a fun song with lots of jumping too ^_^

GUTS was next! I love it whenever they perform this song! I think they were on the moving stage or the stage closest to us. I got to see this performance pretty well!! Lots of mucking around in this one! Nino in the middle, Sakuraiba mucking around on the right, Nino joining Sakuraiba to dance the chorus, Juntoshi mucking around on the other side, Jun was standing behind Ohno and they were so close to each other during the chorus!! I think it may be this song too when Aiba and Nino attempted to dance to UB but as it’s been a while they kinda failed at it and it was so funny! They looked like they were having a great time!! Kimi no uta was the next song. The penlights turned a light green, very nice harmonies! Aiba’s solo bit was also really nice!! :D

Then the room got dark, and then slow instrumental version of Kimi no uta played :’). It was time for the greetings :’) Our penlights all turned red. Sho-kun was first. He asked us “Who likes Arashi?” Everyone screamed “Me”. “Who can only think about Arashi?” Again “Me”. Then he said it’s the same for him, all he can ever think of now is Arashi :’D
He then talked about how it was amazing when they first had 5x5, and then 5x10, and now that it is 5x20 he doesn’t know what to think anymore. “Although it is amazing that the number on the right keeps on increasing, the fact that the number ‘5’ on the left and its meaning hasn’t changed all these years is what is more amazing” :’) <3 Sho-kun!!~ <3

Aiba was next. He thanked us for all being there. He said that recently he’s been thinking about the power of music, and if it weren’t for music he wouldn’t have met Arashi and wouldn’t have met all of us today. Aiba’s voice is so gentle! :’) “Even if I gathered all the thankyous in this world, it would still not be enough”.

Ohno’s speech was funny ^_^ He talked about how he was only 18 when he debuted, and now Arashi is now 20. He kept saying that he is still a young man, and that even if it looks like he is an old man he is actually still young. And that Arashi are all becoming old men too. He said that it’s because we are always there watching them that they can be young like this. He said he would like to continue this concert with a youthful spirit. ^_^

Nino said that recently he’s been asked by magazines how has it been with these 5 people over 20 years. He said that he hates these questions, because Arashi is the only who could really understand how it felt. From Nino’s speech there was a tint of how hard it actually was back then for them. He said that there might be times when he will say thank you light-heartedly “Arigatou”(said in a very casual tone ;D), but that he wants to continue to say thank you properly to everyone this next year.

Matsujun was the last person. He thanked us all for being there, and said that he hoped this concert was able to convey the gratitude they felt to all the 50 000 people here tonight. He talked about how he was able to get ideas from our song choices for this concert and also included songs that all of Arashi definitely wanted to include.
He talked about how the 5 of Arashi had dined out on their anniversary, and had been congratulated by staff and other people, but that the 20th anniversary only feels like it has actually started now that they have sung and dance and met all of us here in the dome tonight. And that this encounter is a precious moment to him :’) “Really really really thank you so much”. He looked so earnest saying this :’) His voice was soft and low and I love the way his eyes into the distance when he speaks and it looks like he’s really thinking and speaking naturally. I’m so happy I got to see this :’) <3

Then he introduced the new song 5x20 that they had wrote themselves for this concert.
A gentle melody started playing and then the tune of the end of 5x10 started playing and they sang “La, la, la, la..” :’) The realization of it was powerful. My friend and I grabbed each other and squealed and tears were forming in my eyes. It’s a continue on from 5x20 :’)

The first line was “Mata koko de kimi to aeta” - “Once again, we meet you here” …. :’)
The screen showed some old photos of Arashi. At other times, the screen splits in 5 and shows the members close up while they sing.
The lyrics and translations of this song are already up, so I will just put up a few that I remember.
The music continues on with the same melody as the rap bit in 5x10, but with different lyrics. Overall the lyrics are more positive and reflect the happiness and love in the second half of their 20 years, rather than their struggles.

The chorus has pretty much has the same lyrics as 5x10 sang with a similar melody, but slightly different key.
"Honki de naite, honki de waratte, honki de nayande, honki de ikitakara, Bokura wa koko ni tatsu"
~ We cried for real, we laughed for real, we worried for real, because we lived for real, we are now standing here ~

Then the second part of the chorus is different but sung in the same tune. I really like this lyrics.
“Minna de sorotte, arigatou da nante, atarimae janakute, shiawase na koto nandatte, waratte kyou wo iwaou”
~ Being together with everyone and saying thank you isn’t something to be taken for granted, but it is our happiness. So let’s smile and celebrate today ~

During this bit, the screen was divided in 5 and you could see all the members singing the chorus earnestly. It was really really beautiful!!!! <3 :’)

“5 is my treasure number”

“Minna to isshon ni aruita 20 nen, saikou da yo”
~ The 20 years that we walked with everyone were the best”

“Daijoubu, koko ni iru”
~ It’s ok, we are here”

“5 and you by 20”

“Bokura kara minna ni arigatou”
~ Thank you from us to everyone”

In this last bit again, the screen was divided in 5 and all members sang arigatou really loudly looking up with their eyes almost closed” :’) At the end of the song, I saw Jun mutter a small Arigatou :’)

I really love this song!! The lyrics are beautiful and extra special because it was Arashi themselves who wrote it and Nino composed it. It makes me happy that they felt they had an amazing 20 years with us despite all the difficulties they faced in their early years. They have worked so hard and deserve every success and happiness they have now. They are always thinking about us fans, always saying thank you and including us in their journey. They are the ones that have worked the hardest these 20 years to be where they are, and yet they are still so humble, saying that being able meet us and say thank you is not something to be taken for granted.

When the song ended, they held hands and bowed. Being there at the concert, they bowed for a much longer time that I had imagined. It’s as beautiful and it is heartbreaking. The image of all 5 of them hands linked bowing low in front of 50 000 of us for what felt like quite a long time. :’)

Then they were all smiles and waved bye to us and the stage went down.

It was then time for the encore. The penlights were still on and writing some moving words or patterns on it that I couldn’t read from my angle. We chanted “Arashi”. I’m actually surprised that a lot of people didn’t call for an encore, and the calls weren’t really that loud. It’s obvious that there was going to be an encore as all the lights were still on, but I kind of expected that everyone would be more hyped for it? I couldn’t help thinking if Arashi was listening to this backstage and was this what it is always like and therefore normal? Or was this less excitement compared to usual? I would feel really bad for them if that was the case. They really put so so much effort into this whole concert!!!

But when they reappeared on the stage for the encore, they were smiling widely, dressed in pink suits and suspenders and getting everyone excited again. The cheers were really loyud again. They went around on the carts and waved to all the fans! We were all waving back desperately trying to get them to see us! The first song was Fight Song and everyone joined in. I’ve always wanted this song to be performed if I go to a concert, it’s so fun!!! Matsujun’s voice was getting squeaky by this time singing his solo lines :’D
Then was Zekkouchou chou! Again, one of my favourite concert songs!! I couldn’t believe we got both of them in a row!! I also love the part when everyone screams “Chou!” at the end! It was so loud! :D So in between Fight song and Zekkouchou chou something amazing happened!! Matsujun was on the cart and moving across the centre. He had just passed our section, when for some reason he looked back and he looked straight in our direction!!!!! He waved at us!!!! <3 :’D Because we were quite up high I can’t tell for sure, but my friend was there too and she was convinced that he did see us!! I was also holding my MJ love uchiwa! Gyyya I hope that’s true!!! <3 Even for a moment!!! Thank you Matsujun!!!! <3 I love him so much!!! <3 :’)

Then came Pikanchi Double and Love So Sweet while they were going around on the carts! These songs are awesome!! I’m glad they did include them. I was pretty sure they would include Love So Sweet even though it didn’t appear in the main concert. Love So Sweet is like a part of Arashi. <3  In Love so Sweet, the screen was showing backstage videos of Arashi, including when they first arrived at Sapporo dome wearing casual clothing, and jumping around arms on each other, as they took selfies with each other in front of Sapporo dome. It's so warm and cute :') We tried to wave to all the members as they pass by on the carts. Aiba and Sakurai were doing Disco star all the time, and the other members laughing ^_^

The last song was Happiness, and they made their way back to the main stage. Their pose for the end of Happiness was so cute!! First them sideways with the arms in front of them, then Matsujun and Aiba doing piece signs and smiling so widely!! It was projected on the big screen too! I think they were copying a pose they did in Happiness PV. It was the cutest thing!!!!!!!! I can’t believe I saw it!!!

Then Matsujun yelled “Orera no namae wa nanda? Se no -“
And we all screamed “Arashi!!!!”
And they all bowed again, and the silver tape came shooting out! I think the second burst of silver tape may have come late cos everyone was surprised and they started laughing ;D
I didn’t know that silver tape only shot out in the arena zone. Unfortunately we couldn’t get any from the stands :’(

Then the stage descended and they said their thankyous and byes. Matsujun and Ohno were next to each other. Matsujun did a piece sign, then Ohno did a piece sign. And as the stage went down, Ohno tried to push his piece sign in front of Matsujun’s. Then Matsujun changed his into a fist like they were playing rock paper scissors. Ohno kept his piece sign and in the end the last camera shot was Ohno’s piece sign before it disappeared under the stage. Ohno-kun won this time!! ;D

Then the lights went on, and it was finished. There wasn’t a call for a second encore. We had to wait until our seats were called to leave the dome. We took photos of our penlights with Sapporo dome in the background. I felt like I was going to cry when exiting the dome. :’( I don’t want it to end. It was a magical 3.5 hours, it was like inside a dream.

Afterthoughts

Arashi’s 5x20 anniversary concert is the first concert I’ve ever been to, and it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I really still can’t believe that I was lucky enough to see this concert.

The concert had all the songs that represent Arashi, all the songs that fans love and songs that are fun at a concert. The stage and effects was relatively simple, except the penlights. There is nothing simple about the penlights at all! It felt like, rather than focusing on special effects, the focus of this concert was to do things that would be fun and enjoyable for everyone, and to get close to the fans. There were a lot of waving at fans, and mucking around with each other. Even though we were on the stands, they made an effort to involve everyone. They called out to the upper stands, they looked up and waved and smiled at us. We didn’t feel left out at all. As a special, we got to see rare things like Sho-kun playing piano and Jun-kun conducting.
Being able to see an Arashi concert after only 3 years into the fandom, especially as an international fan, is something rare and something I’m really thankful for. Thank you to my friend and everyone who has made this trip possible and making my dreams come true. It is by good luck that my friend won tickets to Sapporo concert, and the date happened to fit into my annual leave that was decided one year ago. It was only possible this year that I have started working and could go on such short notice and could afford the plane tickets and accommodation. If any of this was different, I wouldn’t be able to go.

Thank you Arashi for creating this beautiful concert. Thank you for showing me your 20 years of hard work, of frustrations, of happiness and gratitude. Thank you for showing me this dream you painted, and like many other fans, for allowing us to turn this into our dream as well.

Seeing Arashi sing and dance and laugh and muck around with each other like usual, makes me feel warm and relaxed inside. Even though it’s my first time seeing them in real life, there’s an overwhelming sense of familiarity. It’s the same Arashi doing what they usually do, whether it’s on a variety show or concert DVD or in real life, making everyone feel at ease and happy with their presence. Arashi do a really good job bringing all fans, new or old, along with them on the journey and making fans feel close to them.

The song 5x20 and this concert gave me a strong feeling of Arashi’s love and gratitude for fans, their staff and juniors and most importantly Arashi members themselves. The bond they have between them is irreplaceable. They have been so sweet and soft with each other during this concert. There is a strong feeling that they will continue with no hint of stopping, always the 5 of them along with everyone that supports them. If our feelings of gratitude could also reach Arashi and they could know that we’re glad they’re here after 20 years too, and how much difference they’ve made to our lives.

Being able to meet Arashi at their first 5x20 anniversary concert in Sapporo Dome, is a precious time for me. Being able to laugh, cry, sing and scream “Arashi” with my friend next to me, with Arashi smiling at us from the stage, surrounded by a sea of rainbow coloured penlights of 50 000 people who all share the same dream. Being able to think only of Arashi is a wonderful thing. It is definitely not something to be taken for granted. I don’t know when I’ll see them next. Of course, I hope that I’ll see them soon. But even if I don’t, I’ll keep waiting until the day I can see them again. Because Arashi will continue, because Arashi will always stay as 5 people. As long as there are 5 people in Arashi, our dreams will also continue.

Thank you for the miracle of being able to meet and celebrate Arashi’s 20th year anniversary with them in Sapporo Dome, first concert, 16th November 2018. And a big big big congratulations on their 20th anniversary!

Thank you for taking the time to read all of my long ramblings!! Part of this was me wanting to write it down so that I will always remember it too and express my gratitude.
Best wishes to Arashi for their long 5x20 tour, and I hope everyone who goes has an amazing time!
I look forward to seeing the concert DVD of 5x20 so I can relive these memories :')
