i did my first solo birth (without a mentor) as a doula on thursday! i was on call for this family and they called me early in the morning (3:42 am) to say they were on the way to the hospital, and could i come over in an hour or two? i arrived a little after 5 am, the baby was born by 3, and i left a little after 4 pm. it was a long day, but ( Read more... )

How do you become a doula?

basically, you read a lot of books (off a specific reading list), attend a set of regular childbirth classes (like the ones for parents-to-be, but you have to do them not as an expectant parent), attend a doula training workshop, and do some certification paperwork if you want to be certified. for more information on doulas in general check out dona.org and on becoming one in particular http://dona.org/CertificationOverview.html

it is incredibly rewarding and i highly recommend it.
