Wow... Students in the states never would have considered doing anything like that. Do you think it's because you've got private students or would a class of regular Japanese public school students do that for a teacher?
I think a lot of it is because they're adults. Everyone in this class is at least out of college, some much older. Also, this is the senka class - so we spend a lot of time together. I've never had one of my regular group classes go quite this far even - but they did have another joint birthday a while back for two students.
I think it must be part of the class dynamic for this particular kind of class. Also they are really just that nice. That's why I want you to meet them so much!
At senka, there's only one set of classes (because they meet every day) at this school. So if I teach senka next year there, and the students choose to shell out for another year - I will have them. But there's no saying I can't keep in touch with them afterwards, either.
