Costume vs. Garb

Jul 29, 2008 10:50

I was in the SCA for around 10 years and towards the end got rather serious about what I wore. The stuff I was wearing stopped being costumes and became garb. Costumes get worn once or twice and you worry less how they fit or feel and more with how they look as an effect. Garb is clothes. You want clothes to look good but you also want them to feel ( Read more... )

Well, yeah. I know what I want to do, too.
Raising a 3yr old, though, kind of reinforces the difference between "Want" and "Need." And years of being poor has also made the "What I need" vs "What I can get by with" a very hard habit to shake. :)

I can totally understand that - but i really can't give you any good advice.

Many years ago i spent £50 a red coat (military cut tailcoat). It was very expensive at the time and isn't worn a lot...but when it comes out its good, and its got years of life left.

/nods I once spent $100 on a tails tuxedo that was my size with the same description. There really isn't any good advice. It's either take the plunge or figure out how to fake it and suffer the personal ignominy. :)

So if you need a new dress for a wedding, how much do you spend on it?

As the bride or a guest?
Is someone we know having a steampunk wedding?

No one I know is having a steampunk wedding but my point is you are likely to wear the Victorian dress to as many events as you would a nice cocktail dress bought to attend a wedding. Let's not go into what you might spend on a bride's maid dress that more than likely you will NEVER WEAR AGAIN. I'm saying it's got repeat wear potential, you want it, and Costumecon 27 is in Baltimore in May.

You've already said you can afford it. What less frivolous things are you going to buy with the money? What can you sell/barter to offset the cost? Will you enjoy making an wearing it? What is the value of it's effect on your mental health?

How much will I pay you (marjai, that is, I'm just capitolising on your post here) to model in it for some of the imagery ideas we've been bouncing back and forth? *G*

Hey, Will Pay For Modeling! You too can receive largesse!

Been a loooooong time since I've been to Necro. And a Steampunk outfit... yeah, I could go there. Besides, seriously, I've got some image ideas in mind and am looking for models, yanno?
