All of this is really well-expressed, including the understanding of how great a step it is from poverty to the building blocks to get out.

One thing that is implied here is that those in generations who sacrified might perhaps never have experienced the rewards of their work themselves. They enabled their children to do better, and their children's children, but it is very hard for most people to constantly strive without personal, immediate benefit.

Thank you and yes, that is the way things worked out in my family.

I remember being really upset for my Pappa having to leave school when he could have done so much better through education. Luckily his brain and ethos saw him through to becoming a master painter and decorator. He even had his own firm for a hot minute, but his partner had to get married and then the war started... Then again, he had no real choice about getting work at 14 as he was one of the eldest of a very big family.
