Myself and Linda have been quiet again on here recently due to my computer's C drive dying on us, so we can't use the computer much at all so no updates

What will bring down the whole of the Western world is the Star Wars-esque Electromagnetic Pulse Bomb. I've seen a small-scale desmonstration of what it can do to a PC (the PC and pulse bomb were contained in one electromagnetically shielded room) - the screen develops stripes, and... *plip* off it goes. You try and switch it on again, and it can't do anything. The BIOS is completely rogered, and the hard drive is presumably wrecked as well. If this happened over the whole of Western Europe, we'd be fucked within seconds because *everything* would be switched off. Nothing these days is not controlled by computers, and every country affected would collapse within a week, maximum.
Scary, isn't it? It's just a good job that there's already satellites patrolling the skies for exactly this kind of event. Because if it did happen, we'd all be sitting ducks for the Al-Qa'eda lunatics.
Solar flares, any nuke big enough to generate an EMP that could take out that much 'leccy hardware across such a large area would be such a large nuke that last thing on your mind as the earth was shredded asunder probably not be : "oh dear, looks like it'll be needing a new motherboard then"
Solar Flares on the other hand come in pre-packaged 'leccy equipment rogering format. Do a Google for some of the effects on power grids in Canada about 6/7 years ago.
Personally i can't wait, i'm gonna go all primitive and spear me some chav's to arrange staked to the outer walls of fortress!

Nukes chuck out massive EMP waves as well. But there's the blast wave that gets people's attention first of course, in that case.
