book talk time!

So, I have ridiculous reading this term-my Russia & the West seminar is like all primary sources, my Gender & Law obviously features legal documents heavily (actually wish they'd do that more, the cases are loads more interesting than secondary-source books cataloguing and summarizing the cases)-and while I am deeply into it all, it does mean that ( Read more... )

I cannot tell you how much I enjoy this post. I haven't read any chick lit in years, but when I was 12 I read an ungodly number of Nora Roberts books that my Mother gave me (completely normal/appropriate/etc). I remember loving some trilogy about keys or some shit? And I was aaaaaaall about books with witches, and I remember there being a gr9 trilogy about, like, some woman fleeing a domestic abuse situation, who finds a home on an island off the East coast with some New Agey lady named Mia? And there's also some lady who's a cop and idk how she is even related but she falls in love with some nerdy guy. And then they all cultivate their witchy powers and take down the abusive husband. Some Pulitzer shit right there ( ... )

Butting in to say those Nora Roberts witch books are the Three Sisters Island trilogy and they are comfort for my soul. I've probably read them five or six times since high school. They make me feel cozy and content. Idk.

As someone who's read wayyy too many of the Nora Roberts series, I remember loving these series too. Some had great friendships.

i don't read a lot of lighthearted escapist list - i think fanfic pretty much fills that void, now that i think about it!

seconding the jennifer crusie for chick lit rec, though - she's basically the only chick lit author i can stand.

this also isn't necessarily a shameful novel but fall on your knees by anne-marie macdonald might interest you? idk, it has fucked up family dynamics along with a bunch of other stuff that seems to coincide with your literary likes.

Unfortunately, I think I kind of went through the same pattern you did - introducing myself to grown up literature at a young age and sort of ruining it for myself? I read a lot of Meg Cabot, still do - her stand alone chick-lit's are pretty much what I think of when I think of chick-lit. I do want to read more escapist literature especially this year but I don't seem to be able to find any that agrees with me? I just always want the writing to be sharper, wittier and more full than it is which is maybe an indicator of my own snobbery but who knows? Currently, for escapist pleasures I'm thinking of giving Emma Forrest a look since you recced her so highly - and trying to figure whether or not I can really subject myself to The Paris Wife. (Too much emotional investment in that particular set of writers. If it's bad I won't just be upset, I'll be devastatingly angry.)

(Honest to god, I just want chick lit heroines to all be Blair Waldorf and they never are. Things I may have to fix.)

My Goodreads list says it all really. I swing from historical fiction to chick lit, to crime fiction, to classics. Light of the classics lately, admittedly. I need a palate cleanser in the form of chicklit every so often, because... I don't know. They are no actual effort to read and sometimes the more ridiculous something is, the more fun it is.

The worst book I read recently was Teach Me by R A Nelson about a student/teacher affair, except I hated both of the main characters, and omgg, so frustrating. Sometimes YA novels can be awesome but mostly I get super annoyed if they bitch and moan to much, lol.
