icon spotlighting tut for psp/gimp users.
hey guys! i noticed some people asking recently how to achieve the spotlight affect in psp/gimp, so here you go. should be translatable to all programs!

i'm starting with a base i cropped, 100x100, of marilyn monroe. it's best to crop your icon so that the person is relatively small and there is space - like sky or something - around them in the icon, to make room for the black background. you can do whatever you want coloring-wise with your base, sharpen, desaturate, whatever you want.
1. first, make a new layer. then use your selection tool with the circle setting to select a part of the icon. i chose marilyn's face. then go to selections >> invert (ctrl+shft+i) and flood-fill the selection with black.

2. DE-SELECT your selection (ctrl+d). adjust >> blur >> gaussian blur. i set mine to 4.00, but you can play around with it. this will make the edges of your spotlight much softer.
3. this next step is a bit tricky. new raster layer, then place it underneath your black spotlight layer. then, grab your circle selection tool once more and make another circle starting from around the same spot you made the first one, so that you can have a color ring inside the spotlight.

4. invert the selection (ctrl+shft+i). then choose a color for your ring, flood-fill the selection, and set this layer to whatever suits your fancy. for example, i used a medium pink, set it to burn, duplicated and set the second layer to soft light. the ring is your chance to play with color and be original.
5. de-select, then gaussian blur the color ring.
6. lastly, add a light texture, text, color/light spots, or whatever you want on top. play up the icon, make it pretty and yours. i used a lovely texture from luux_lu and a red spot set to screen and ended up with my final product.
