The national Do-Not-Call list will be a good thing if it works. Now we also need an international DO_NOT_SPAM list...

I'm pretty convinced spam can't be regulated by government because it's so easy for spammers to operate offshore in countries that won't outlaw them, or won't bother to enforce such laws even if they exist. Spammers will just start using some server in Romania or Nepal.

In the end, I think some sort of widespread adoption of some of the challenge-response type software -- probably built into e-mail clients -- is probably what will have to happen to get spam out of our lives.

Here's something that sort of fits the bill:

Yeah, I read something about that. I think that sort of thing is definitely the future, because the spam volume is going up, and the spam filtering technology isn't keeping up. When technology like that is implemented in Microsoft Outlook and whatnot, I think we'll finally see the ENLARGE YOUR PENIS reign of terror come to an end.

Also, it's hard to spoof a phone number, so it's harder to get away with illegal telemarketing.

I'll agree with that... misundsinbir July 7 2003, 21:06:32 UTC
How many times can you send a spam mail for a penis enlarger to a chick? If a guy can't get it up on his own, that's his fault and needs to take care of that problem himself....and, yeah, SPAM MAIL SUCKS HAIRY PIG TESTICLES.
