[It's late afternoon. It's been awhile, but when Katara took him and his friends in when they were reduced to six or seven years of age for an experiment, he remembered some things.

Dinner together every evening, before it's too dark out. And Katara is the cook. This time of the day, barring some surprising circumstance, she would be at home making dinner.

That's what he's banking on, and that's why he's sent Shino to her house looking for her. A head's up would be good though - if not just for her sake, but so she can get everything she needs and be ready to go by the time Shino gets there.

He gets the feeling that timing is going to be critical.]

Katara. You there?

[It's not too surprising that Shikamaru knows this part of her routine - dinner with everyone in the house is the one thing Katara insists on... along with everyone helping out with chores to keep the house clean, but that's another story.

What is surprising is that he's filtering something to her.]

[At least something is going right today.]

I need your help. There's something wrong with Chouji, and we're going to need a healer on hand until we can get him to the clinic.

[While far from sounding panicked, his typical drawl is absent when he speaks here, making him sound more like he's giving a report. He turns his attention away from the journal, going back to his task of working off the straps of Chouji's armor.]

[There's a sharp inhale as the pieces fall into place.

Chouji's back. They did something.]

Don't worry about that. I've already sent Shino to come get you - he'll be there soon, and he'll bring you here. He left about a minute ago...

[Final strap taken care of, the armor falls to the grass with a muted clang, but that's not what distracts Shikamaru's attention. There was another sound there briefly. Was that Chouji...?]

Just go get everything you'll need. He should be there by the time you're done.

[She leaves the journal opened, but she rushes to get her medical kit. She always wears the spirit water around her neck, and she just put fresh water into her waterskin a little while ago.

She does, at least, remember to turn off the flame on the oven, but the rest of the food is left half-chopped and scattered along the kitchen counter.]

[He won't be responding. Not long after Katara leaves to get her kit and moments before Shino arrives at House 56, Shikamaru hears the noise again, wheezed like a strangled cat. What's worse is what follows.

Silence.]

Dammit! Chouji! [His curse is low and under his breath, escaping the journal's microphone. It only takes a second to confirm it: He's not breathing, and the erratic pulse between Shikamaru's fingertips is weakening.

Needless to say, as he turns Chouji back onto his back to begin compressions, Shikamaru hopes Shino gets the two of you back here fast.]
