[All right, enough of this. It's Spring and she still loves Spring (only her third Spring ever!) and Katara has decided she is going to enjoy it. No school today, so in the late morning to mid afternoon, if you are by the paths along the river you will see one (1) Katara, with a basket and her knife, taking cuttings of wildflowers. She's careful ( Read more... )

Yes. Fierce mice. For their incredibly large ears.

[People here ask the funniest questions--but the novelty of talking to a book is still new enough that she's perfectly happy to answer.]

My older sisters taught me to make daisy chains when I was a little girl. And there was May Day, of course. We'd make little baskets out of paper scraps, fill them with wildflowers, and leave them at neighbours' doorsteps.

These days I don't do much more than go for a walk in the park and look at all the flowers and green grass there.

[Oh - an unfamiliar voice and picture. A New Feather?]

Was May Day a holiday? What did it celebrate?

[Quite a New Feather, utterly starry-eyed over the technology at hand.]

Nothing much, really. It's to celebrate spring, mostly--well, when we celebrated it, it was, the unions do other things, of course. It's sort of a game--you have to knock on the door of the house you're leaving your May Day basket at, and if they open it before you've run away and hid, you owe them a kiss.

And all right, you've got me curious: You don't mean actual mouse ears, do you?

[...unions? A game that ends up leading you to owe a kiss?]

That... sounds like some crazy kind of holiday. [The Malnosso wouldn't probably like that one, considering. And her hand goes up to touch her lips, briefly, before she continues.]

And no, it's not actual mouse ears. It's just the name of the only kind of flower which really grew in our area of the South Pole.

[...How to handle Katara.]

...I got rid of them all, unfortunately. [Mostly to other people, but what was left was well spoiled a day or two ago.] But... if you wanted some, there are a few left on the very high branches. I was trying to get them down.

[Friendly and casual, we has it.]

I'm sorry I missed them. I would like to try some, if you don't mind a visit.

[What, this is totally not a thinly veiled excuse.

...at least Katara does love mikans?]

I don't mind. I'm ...up at the orchard right now, actually. If you wanted to stop by.

I'd like that, actually. I'm by the plaza, so I'll head up there now.

[Should be a bit.]

I'll let you know when I'm close?

You should come to the flower shop! We have lots of flowers to look at there!

[VASH LOVES FLOWERS!]

[Katara laughs.]

I'll bet you do - but that's not the same thing as seeing them growing.

Then we should take a walk together sometime. I've been keeping track of some of the best spots where the flowers grew best last year. I could show you them.

[No, really. He really, REALLY likes flowers.]

[She is getting that impression.]

You know what? I'd like that, Vash. We should do that sometime.

[Someone new is walking along the river today. She doesn't seem to really be watching where she's going, keeping her eyes on the water as she walks instead.

Hopefully she doesn't trip over Katara.]

[That would be bad, as this knife she is carrying is very sharp. However, although Katara's bending down and cutting off some wildflowers, she hears the sound of someone approaching and turns her head in time to call out-]

Hello!

[Between the two of them? That knife would be no issue.

The voice stops Mia in her tracks and takes her attention away from the water]

Hello. I'm sorry, I nearly walked right into you!

[Katara straightens up and smiles, sliding the knife back into it's sheath and dropping the flowers into her basket.]

That's all right, you missed me! [Blue... hair...

Katara blinks a bit, smiling.] I'm Katara. What's your name?
