I see.

Taiwan news:

Not in the headlines, right now they are most concerned with ECFA. When you watch news in Taiwan, there is not much international news, mostly local and it's stuff like, "omg, person A poured acid on person B because they were breaking up!" OR showing the politicians getting verbally violent (and sometimes physically violent) in parliament. Maybe it has changed now, but that's what I remember from living there for three years.

CNN has finally decided to cover the event.

The coverage consists of paraphrasing the final PR statement that the meeting issued. CNN admits to this in their opening paragraph:

"The Group of Eight rich nations focused on recovery from a global economic crisis in their two-day summit but made note of other thorny issues in their final statement issued Saturday." (link)

This was really interesting! Being here with no exposure to TV or media (and not reading them online either), I only know about these things from other people. It does seem quite less of a concern here on the west coast though.

Oh the US...why am I not surprised?

I'm willing to bet that this may be a product of your social circles. If you aren't looking for news, and your friends aren't the kinds of people to be looking for, and interested in current events, it's easy to miss a lot.

I'm sure there are lots of people in Vancouver eagerly hoping to see some Torontonians get pepper-sprayed in the face.

As someone who works in the US, lives in Canada and listens to the CBC on her 2 hour commute to work and 2 hour commute home from work, let me just say...

My collegues here in Northern New York (many who have actually been on a couple trips to Toronto, Kingston, or Ottawa) knew nothing about the fake lake, or the G8/G20 summits until June 25ish. Although to be fair 1 didn't know who Kim Jong Il was or that there was a dictatorship in North Korea.

Other news stories they knew nothing about: Police raids for Mr. Coke in Jamica, the red shirts in Bangkok, or the riots in Greece.

But they did know that they beat England in soccer!

Do they know that they didn't actually "beat" England at all?

I fully forgive other countries not covering aspects like the $1 Billion price tag, or the "fake lake", because realistically, those are national issues for Canada. Falling under matters of sound fiscal policy. But not covering any of the meat of the conference itself? That's a travesty.
