The Real LJ Idol * 3 Strikes * Week 5: Kuchisabishii

A yearning ache pulled at her day and night,
so she just kept on moving along without
pause for fear that if she did take a
moment to rest, the breath would
be squeezed from her lungs.

She dug deep into treasured
sands under inviting waters,
tilted her head
toward whispered promises
scattered in the waves.
She accepted the invitation of
clinking broken shells.

Her palms were heavy with the nostalgia of
millions of years and the deep mystery of
time black and dense against her searching fingertips.

She cupped the found
shark teeth against her heart
like precious seeds
until the urge to place them safely
under her tongue
called out like a siren song,
full of lonely aching
for the briny truth of
how small we are and
how short our
time is.

The ocean pushed at her thighs.
In a fever dream, she saw the hungry mouths
of the great white sharks
biting at the water’s surface,
like the carp from her childhood
with their big gaping toothless maws,
sucking at the air,
desperate for a taste of anything. But
these jaws, they were full of teeth,
gleaming.

When she awoke she saw her lover’s side was raw and red,
as if the tender skin had scraped against an armored beast.
She wasn’t sure she was even hungry, but
her teeth longed for something to sink into.
She was so curious
about taking a bite
out of
everything.
