I did say I didn't like Lady Gaga. It's true. HOWEVER. Her latest video "Telephone" with Beyoncé is pretty fucking brilliant (so I suppose I should also recognize Jonas Åkerlund's genius). The music is boring, but her whole performance-art-24/7 persona is awesome. She is totally growing on me.

It's like watching a bad parody of Cremaster 3 every time I see her videos, especially this latest one. And a bad parody of that is still pretty good, hahaha!

My big issue with her is that it seems so contrived. Take Bjork for example. Also pretty crazy. But Bjork had crazy music. There is no part of Bjorks life or art that would make you think that she is wearing a swan dress for any reason other than her being touched in the head.

She has interesting videos, in the same way that yeah, Cremaster is interesting. But I feel she is disingenuous as an "artist".

To me I can totally see the culture and the world Gaga came from, though. She's a perfect amalgam of crazy "diva" culture (especially in the gay community... and actually she sounds like Cher's "Believe" album) and absurd haute-couture fashion. Like, a lot of the stuff she wears is actually from the runway of big designers. Like I get what she is trying to do and say about celebrity and being "fierce" and edgy. Very high fashion.

To quote (as well as I can remember) from my book, if fashion is art, it is stuff like this that drives me to dada.

I'm wondering - did you watch the video?

For what it's worth, the "Telephone" video is a direct sequel to the (even crazier and more disquieting) "Paparazzi" video.

I know! i'm a big Alexander Skarsgård fan, and he's in that video, so I've seen it before.

I like that she is able to be loud and garish, yet still be very self-aware inside celebrity culture. I guess the big challenges ahead are to survive that insanity without, say, a total public meltdown, and to remain relevant.

M-TV has said that they weren't going to show the new Lady Gaga video. I guess no one bothered to point out to M-TV that they don't really show music videos anymore.

I'm not blown any by her music, but I am very impressed by the stylization of her music videos. I think that she has a good opportunity to have a decent, long career.
