Oh, Can Lit... One of my favourite courses that wasn't geography. Social history ranked up there too, but that English class has continued to influence what I read. I'd like to hear what authors you're covering and I'm happy to read if you are looking for an audience.
No, I'd definitely be up for constructive criticism - we offer these up in class to be torn apart - no reason you shouldn't offer two bits as well!
And chutchings: the reading list is: The Diviners - M. Laurence As for Me & My House - S. Ross Three Day Road - J. Boyden Billy Bishop Goes to War - Gray / Peterson (Oscar from Corner Gas) Strike! The Musical - Schur / Chafe Canadian Poetry x3 - Geddy And one more... I can't find the book right now though.
I LOVE THE DIVINERS. oh, sorry that slipped out. Stone Angel was a horrible blight in high school, mediocre teacher who let the class rule, not a great book but I know my memory is tainted by the weeks that it dragged on because no one else read it. So, I expected to hate Diviners when it was on my reading list for Can Lit, was I ever surprised when I couldn't put it down and have read it multiple times since then. If you do like it, read The Fire Dwellers as well when the semester is over. Bird in the House and A Jest of God are good, but they aren't as good as Diviners and Fire Dwellers.
I can't say I'm familiar with the others though. We read a lot of short stories rather than novels, I suspect so we could see more authors in the one semester. I'd like to hear about them if you end up with favourites. I'll have to keep an eye out next time I'm in a used book store. Poetry isn't really my thing, not sure about the musical, that could be an interesting format to read. I think most of the plays I read were by Shakespear.
So far, Strike was ok, Billy Bishop was amusing (both short plays) but Three Day Road was *really* good and recommended. I'll keep you posted as I get them read.
I've made a little post it note for my purse next time we're in a book store because I always forget titles/authors and wander around saying "The title had a number in it..."
I imagine this is tying up your free time reading, but we can trade a few authors when you've got more time to read for yourself. What I do find funny is that I was drawn toward authors writing either about or from Manitoba before I ever knew Darren. Like Margaret Lawrence and Gabrielle Roy. Roy as some great short stories like Street of Riches http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_of_Riches The Tin Flute is a great novel, but I do enjoy the short story format.
