From personal experience, avoid these types of discussions at all costs. You can not fathom the amount of BS and misinformation (and disinformation) spread; plus they only lead to undue stress. Having already gone through the college process and nearly ready to hit the finish line, I can safely say that there is no purpose to these. While they sometimes do have hard facts that the Deans purposefully neglect to give because of their own systemic problems, the absolute best way to cut through the crap is to talk to a Senior who has already gone through it all. They aren't competing anymore, they've seen it all, heard it all, and know what they're talking about (a la moi).
haha teddy...maybe just for you overall, i also find these conversations unfavorable, but i tend to find them more demoralizing when i hear: "oh my god, i only have 5 APs this year!" or "my GPA is only around 4.0"
