Re: Children and emotions.

Parenting forbids emotional discourse with children ever since Frank Baum wrote the Wizard of Oz and decided that American childhood has to be protected and kept in a 'pure' state. No, I don't like the decision either. Yes, people like Maurice Sendak tried to change it, and children everywhere fight against it. Anyway, now you have a copy of the memo. Now go out there and kick some ass. :-)

I took all three of my kids to see Where the Wild Things Are. The youngest quickly fell asleep (as predicted), but the older two loved it. Neither they nor I thought it was inappropriate or over their heads. I loved the way Max was portrayed. He reminded me so much of my own 8-year-old boy.

Clearly, you have no parenting skills whatsoever. Don't you know that a child needs to be protected from all bad things at all times, including negative emotions, disappointment, and failure to succeed at every thing every time? Children are delicate creatures that need to be protected from all things unpleasant so that they can somehow, magically grow up to be well balanced people who can deal with the crap life throws at them. You are obviously the type of woman who would let her child ride a bicycle without running next to it, holding on (she could FALL DOWN you monster!) I bet you would even let your child LOSE at a board game. For shame, woman... for shame.

Enh - I saw it on Friday and remembered why I didn't like the book as a kid. But I do agree with you - totally child appropriate.
