My NW Thing

This month I received two photos - one from my mom, and the other from my father-in-law - which just happened to represent the beginning and most recent end of an activity I rather enjoy.

This is the photo my mom passed along to me recently. It's a bit beat up and faded, but it still brought back all sorts of memories. That's me on the right, at about age 14, with my very first salmon - a 3-pound Silver (Chinook). On the left is my cousin John, about 17 or 18 at the time, and my stepdad, Danny in the middle. That was late-summer, 1976, at Crescent Beach, just outside of Port Townsend, Washington.

Jump ahead 29-years, and I've caught my first salmon over 20-pounds, which for some reason had become this 'big hurdle' in my mind. A 23 1/2-pound King Salmon (Coho), August of 2005, outside of Barkley Sound, in British Columbia, Canada.

And this was from this past August, also near Barkley Sound. A 38-pound King Salmon that took me over 30-minutes to get into the boat. (I do believe I look a tad bit smug there!) It's still taking up most of the room in our second freezer, and to be honest, I don't quite know what to do with it yet...
