As an adult, I made friends at Faires, some stayed, some faded. My husband came with a bunch of new friends, many of whom I lost when I left him (through my feelings of guilt, not because they sided with either of us).
When I left my ex last year, I made fervent promises to my friends that I would not disappear, I'd still be in their lives. I'm more experienced now, I understand that to keep friends is to keep up with them. See them when you're in town. Seek them out, and respond on kind when they seek you out.
While I'm not in touch with anyone I knew in school, I have a few friendships that are heading for the 20 year mark, and many that have lasted for over ten.
The older I get, the deeper the friendships are that I make.
