TL;DR version: College students live in an milieu in which any deviant political behavior is rigorously attacked, and the change of government worries them.

I agree with the general thrust of the article. A lot of students have come up through environments of "free acceptable speech," taking the "fighting words" (or even the more modern hate speech) exception to the 1st A to an ad absurdum of "inspiring strong disagreement." And if the 1st A. was intended to protect anything, it's speech that inspires strong disagreement. It is really no wonder they would be expecting an inversion and feel threatened. That threat won't ripen, in part because the campuses aren't going to flip political sides, and in part because most of the outside world in the US doesn't function like that (though speech restriction has slowly been creeping into many areas).
