The last question. Everyone present can feel the tension and holds their breaths, as if breathing too loud would break the concentration. The contest leader breathes in deeply and eyes the two teams intensely, only creating even more tension.
“The team to answer the final question right will be this year's winner of the Regional Math Olympiad, and will take home the grand prize.”
The teams look over at each other, observing their rivals one more time and taking a deep breath. Each team has three members, and all three wear the same shirts representing their own high school proudly.
“For this last question each team will have to choose one contestant to represent the team. Daeryeon High School may choose first.”
Kyuhyun looks to his right to meet his teammates. Victoria is whispering into Changmin's ear as she points at Kyuhyun. Changmin nods in agreement and motions Kyuhyun to come closer.
“You go, Kyu.”
“Why me?” Kyuhyun hisses through his teeth, “You go!”
“You were the one who dragged us here, Kyubaby, now go!”
Kyuhyun glares at Victoria in defeat; he can't retort her words in any way since she's telling the truth. He was the one who just had to give them up for the Olympiad, with the enthusiastic support from their teacher, of course. His friends agreed to participate since they were interested in math (but they would never admit it like that), and it's not like they had another choice when the papers were already sent.
“Cho Kyuhyun will represent our team.” Changmin announces proudly to the contest leader.
“Fantastic, please step forward Kyuhyun-ssi.”
Kyuhyun takes a deep breath as he glances one more time at his friends who are mouthing a fighting at him, complete with their fists in the air. He walks over to the single lectern on their side. He straightens his back and adjusts his glasses, ready for what may come next.
“Now, Joongdeong High School may choose one person to represent your team.”
Kyuhyun sees the other team whispering and pointing at each other. Their team, unusually, consists of two girls and one boy. He stares at the shorter one of the girls and sighs as he gets more nervous every second that passes. Since the moment Kyuhyun laid his eyes on her his concentration hadn't been at his best. She was pouting now and Kyuhyun's heart skips a beat at her luscious lips and the cutesy that she exists of.
“Lee Soonkyu will represent our team.” The only guy exclaims suddenly.
Soonkyu looks slightly uneasy as she walks over to the lectern across Kyuhyun. Kyuhyun observes her as she walks over in her skinny jeans, sneakers and a simple t-shirt with their school logo on it.
(But it seems like her shirt is actually a bit too tight for her chest - Kyuhyun clears his throat and face palms mentally for having such thoughts at such a crucial moment.)
“Now, the moment we've all been waiting for. I hope you guys are ready.”
Soonkyu looks up and meets Kyuhyun’s eyes, only to quickly look down again; he doesn’t even care if she just caught him staring at her. He adjusts his glasses and focuses back on the contest leader.
They grip on their pen as soon as the question blasts through the speakers. The timer starts ticking and both contestants start scribbling quickly on the paper on their lectern. The teams in the back hold their breaths and clench their hands together.
Kyuhyun is the first one to ring the bell and Soonkyu drops her pencil, a defeated look spreading on her face. Kyuhyun glances at her nervously and tells his heart to fuck off for the moment.
Kyuhyun clears his throat and gives his answer.
Kyuhyun's voice trembles and he feels a suffocating heat overtaking his body. His voice softens and he gulps, letting silence take over. He knows everyone must be staring holes into him, but the words are stuck in his throat and his tongue doesn't seem to comply with what he wants.
A loud bell rings and he hears his teammates hiss soft curses under their breath.
"I'm sorry, Kyuhyun-ssi, it seems like you took too long to answer the question."
The contest leader turned towards Soonkyu, "Soonkyu-ssi's final answer will determine who will be going home with the prestigious winner title and the grand sum."
Kyuhyun feels like sinking in the ground and never get out. He just screwed up, badly. He has a hard time processing why he just did that (or so he tries to tell himself when he knows in the back of his head exactly why).
Soonkyu inhales deep after having let out the whole answer in one go. She looks up through her thick-framed glasses at the contest leader in anticipation, and she bites her bottom lip while gripping on the sides of the lectern. Silence takes over for what seems way too long, but Kyuhyun already knows who won; her answer was exactly what was on the tip of his tongue.
“And the winner of this year's national math Olympiad is...” The sound of drumrolls from the speakers builds up incredible tension, much to Kyuhyun's annoyance. "Joongdeong High School, congratulations!"
A huge smile is spread on Soonkyu's face and she throws her arms up in the air. Her eyes are twinkling from happiness and Kyuhyun thinks that maybe he didn't screw up that bad.
Her team members run towards her, shouting cheers and they join in a group hug, squishing Soonkyu in between them. Kyuhyun frowns when the only boy hugs Soonkyu tightly and moves way too close to her, in Kyuhyun’s opinion. They get called up on stage when he feels a hand on his shoulder, and he turns around. Changmin and Victoria stand before him and he slides his hands into his pockets.
"It’s okay, Kyubaby, you did well."
Victoria pats his arm and gives him a sincere smile. Kyuhyun nods at her and inhales deep.
"Actually he didn't," Changmin retorts, "what the hell happened, man?!"
Kyuhyun looks up at the taller boy and knows he won't be able to lie to his best friend. He won't believe him if he told them he didn't know the answer. Changmin looks at him suspiciously and crosses his arms after adjusting his glasses.
Victoria looks over Kyuhyun's shoulder and walks over to the other side, waving at the other team that is walking of the stage with flower bouquets. Kyuhyun turns to stand beside Changmin as they watch Victoria greet the members from the other team and starts talking with them enthusiastically. They’ve always looked up to how social and open she could be (and as time passed by they also learned quite a few tricks from her).
Kyuhyun's eyes are now fixed on only one person as he crosses his arms and clears his throat. Changmin decides to follow Kyuhyun's eyes and he meets the Lee Soonkyu who just won over his best friend. He chuckles and leans closer to Kyuhyun’s ear.
"I knew you knew the answer."
Kyuhyun tries to ignore his best friend, but Changmin stands in front of him and forces him to look in his eyes.
"Not exactly good timing for love at first sight, though." Changmin chuckles at his best friend's uncomfortable face. "But I forgive you. It’s not like you can control it."
Kyuhyun scoffs at his best friend. He remembers when Changmin was helplessly in love with an angel that fell from the skies, as he liked to describe her; Kyuhyun preferred to just call her by her name, Yoona. Changmin would act like a complete idiot and wouldn’t stop talking about her, until Victoria somehow managed to arrange a date for them. He has been dating Yoona since then.
Victoria waves at her teammates and motions them to join them. Changmin grabs Kyuhyun by his wrist and drags him over to Victoria and the other team.
"These are my adorable teammates!" Victoria gestures at the two approaching boys, "Shim Changmin and Cho Kyuhyun."
"We are not adorable, noona." Changmin and Kyuhyun hiss at Victoria. Changmin turns towards the others and introduces himself again, nudging Kyuhyun to do the same (and stop drooling).
Kyuhyun shakes hands with the boy, who apparently is named Lee Sungmin, and happens to be Soonkyu’s twin brother, who of course has every right to hug his sister, Kyuhyun realizes. Next is Seo Joohyun, preferably called just 'Seohyun' and happens to use very formal speech for a teenager.
At last Kyuhyun is confronted with the one and only Lee Soonkyu. Or Sunny, as her friends affectionately call her. Kyuhyun wholeheartedly agrees with her nickname as he believes she shines as much as the sun, if not more.
He congratulates her (and her team, after feeling an elbow poking his ribcage again, that is), and Kyuhyun is in utmost awe because of the girl before him. He makes a mental note to search for his sanity once he gets home.
"Thank you, Kyuhyun-ssi! You did great too."
Kyuhyun loves the way her eyes have crescent moon shapes when she smiles. He wouldn't mind seeing that more often from now on.
"But you still won in the end. And you can just call me Kyuhyun, Sunny."
Because he was focused one hundred percent on Soonkyu he didn't notice his friends leaving quietly; only when Sunny turned her attention away for a second they noticed they were left alone. Different shades of red started spreading on her face and Kyuhyun went closer to her, bowing a bit to meet her eyes.
"Let's go outside, it seems like the warmth in here is starting to get to you."
Kyuhyun grins when she covers her cheeks with both hands, but still nods at him shyly. He didn’t think he’d be able to make her blush like that since he doesn’t particularly have experience in flirting, but then again he’s not your stereotypical nerd either, and let’s say Victoria has had quite an influence on him. He just feels this urge to tease her and lead the way.
Kyuhyun holds the door open for Soonkyu and follows after her; she makes her way down the stairs when Kyuhyun suddenly exclaims, “Wait, Sunny! Your shoe-” He runs after her and tries to catch her before she’d fall, but it’s too late to prevent the incident.
He catches her by her waist and turns their positions, so he would land on the ground instead of her. He groans in pain, but since the stairs is only a few steps it’s bearable. Their teammates were sitting on the benches when they saw what was happening at the school entrance and soon ran over the pair lying on the floor.
Soonkyu widens her eyes in shock because too many things were going on; she was lying on top of Cho Kyuhyun who just saved her from falling, and he is now groaning in pain. Yet to her surprise he smiles at her sweetly and asks, “Are you okay?”
As if his voice triggered something in her mind she finally crawls off of him and kneels next to him.
“Y-yes, I’m fine, but you! Are you alright? Does it hurt?” She helps Kyuhyun sit up and searches him for any wounds or blood stains frantically, “I’m so sorry, Kyuhyun-ssi, I’m so clumsy, I’m really sorry!”
Kyuhyun chuckles and grabs her wrists in an attempt to calm her down, “I’m fine, really. And I told you to drop the honorific, right?” The side of his mouth twitches up in an amusing way when her cheeks heat up again. “Sorry, Kyuhyun.” She mutters softly. Kyuhyun picks up the thick-framed glasses that fell on the floor and helps Soonkyu put it on again. “And stop saying sorry.”
“Are you guys alright?!” Victoria is the first one to exclaim from the group.
Kyuhyun grins as he gets up with the help of Soonkyu, “Don’t worry, we’re fine.”
Victoria sighs in relief and flashes him an understanding smile, only to start giggling with Seohyun quietly. Sungmin pats his sister’s back protectively and turns to Kyuhyun, “Thank you for protecting her, Kyuhyun-ssi.”
“Don’t thank me; I just did what was right to do.”
“Whoa, what happened here?”
Everyone turned towards the entrance when they heard Changmin’s voice. He walked down the stairs holding hands with Yoona.
“Nothing much, really.” Kyuhyun put his hands in his pockets nonchalantly. Changmin cocked an eyebrow at him but decided to just leave it. “...right. Anyway, I have to go, guys, I’m going on date with my Yoongie.”
His teammates chuckle and wave the couple goodbye. Soon enough the rest of the group has to leave too, and Sungmin goes off to get his car (accompanied by Victoria).
“Are you truly okay?” Soonkyu asks him, still feeling guilty.
“Yes, Sunny. I already told you not to worry.”
“R-right, sor-” Before she could finish her sentence Kyuhyun leans down to her eye-height and blinks a few times, she immediately covers her mouth and swallows the unspoken sorry; Kyuhyun just wants to squish her impossibly tight (but he doesn’t, of course, that’d be creepy).
When they hear a horn it’s time for them to say goodbye. Kyuhyun looks at her hesitantly before holding out his hand, “It was a real pleasure to meet you, Sunny.”
She takes his hand and quickly takes out a pen from her pocket; she scribbles a serie of numbers on his hand and pulls him closer. “Thanks again, Kyuhyun-ssi” she whispers in his ear before leaving a peck on his cheek and making her way to her brother’s car with the speed of lightning.
“So she has that side to her, too, I see.” He observes the numbers scribbled on the back of his hand, followed by a ‘~☼’, and chuckles.
“You better save it before it starts fading away.”
He looks up at a brightly smiling Victoria standing before him and grins as he watches the car drive off. He types the numbers into his phone and saves it under the name, Sunny ~☼.
