When Jinki first meets her, it's on the playground at morning recess when they're assembling for their new kindergarten class. They're put with the same teacher for the entire year; a bubbly cheerful woman that they both become quickly fond of. Jinki remembers smiling and saying hello to Hyosung when she was in the sandbox, and she looks away with a small blush and goes back to playing with a stuffed rabbit.

He doesn't pay a whole lot of mind to it, being five and eager to explore the world, until he realizes it's the same shy girl he met earlier that sits next to him later in the month; with her soft black hair and gummy smiles.

"I'm Hyosung," she introduces quietly during arts and crafts one day, holding out a tiny hand to him. Jinki notices splatches of paint from staining her skin; but he finds it cute and endearing in its own little way.

"Jinki," he replies back, taking it. She smiles brightly, reaching into her colouring book and tearing out a page, passing it to him before going back to her picture.

They color together in silence, a box of 96-count Crayola in front of them. Jinki notices that Hyosung has coloured herself with popcorn butter hair, and he resists the urge to smile.

Hyosung catches him staring at her picture, covering it with her tiny hands and blushes darkly. He chuckles and watches her puff her cheeks out in annoyance before toddling away with her drawings, back to the musical note covered rug and beginning to colour there by herself.

Thankfully snack time comes two hours later; the teacher distributing the lunch boxes for the students who had brought their lunch, and snacks to the other students. Jinki receives his lunchbox, opening it and smiling at the contents - a chicken sandwich cut into the hangul for his name, sliced apples with an apple juice box, string cheese, and a chocolate chip cookie with a smile drawn on it.

Hyosung receives her snack from the teacher, smiling and beginning to unwrap it from the flower-patterned cloth, eyes crinkling up at the dolphin shape the sandwich had been cut in.

When she looks up, she realizes that Jinki isn't sitting near her anymore, and she frowns, inwardly wondering if she did something offensive or wrong. As her eyes fall back down to her napkin, she realizes that half of Jinki's cookie is right by her sandwich; almost like an apology for laughing.

She takes a bite, and wonders if this is what kindness tastes like.

(and later when she wakes up late from naptime, she discovers a small bunny-printed blanket draped carefully over her.

this is definitely what kindness is like, Hyosung thinks, and makes a vow to always stay near Jinki. unfortunately, sometimes life doesn't work out, and she's whisked away to a new city before the year finishes out.

whenever she sees fresh-baked cookies, she bites back the urge to cry, thinking she's being childish.)

When Jinki meets her again, they're in their final year of high school, during a cram session in the library. Jinki has his headphones on and a nose in his workbook, but the seat next to him is the only one free, so...

"Excuse me," she says as she adjusts the armful of books, "is anyone sitting here?"

Jinki jolts noticeably, removing the headphones before blinking owlishly up at her through his glasses. "No, nobody is." Without even thinking, he helps her set her books down, smiling back at her.

"Thank you," she responds, eyes crinkling at him in response. Jinki thinks there's something familiar (but he's met a lot of eyesmiling girls, and is even tutoring one), but decides not to press on it.

They study together in silence; scratching pencils and flipping pages being the only thing between them. Hyosung sneaks peeks at Jinki next to her until he catches her staring, smiling and gently poking her with the pencil.

"I don't think I'm on your final exam," he begins, and Hyosung feels her face pull itself into a grimaced smile.

"That was really lame, you know."

"I know," Jinki counters, crinkling up his nose, before reaching into the bag on the table. "Want a cookie?"

Hyosung agrees, and Jinki splits one with her. She bites into it and realizes it's homemade. but before she can ask to be sure, Jinki's suddenly throwing books into his backpack, slinging it over his shoulder and running out of the library, mumbling an apology as quickly as he can.

She looks down at the table and written in a girl's handwriting on a post-it note was oppa, 4:30, right? ^^ -Luna

Hyosung feels a small tinge of jealousy at whoever this Luna girl is. She quickly shakes the feeling off, but it returns. Damn it, he's taken.

When Hyosung meets him for the third time, it's on the rooftop of the building. Usually Jieun accompanies her, but today she's alone and looking down at the streets of Seoul almost regretfully. There's something that she misses, but Hyosung can't put her finger on it, so she sends a text to Jieun, hoping the younger girl can help her.

Some help Jieun turned out to be, Hyosung thinks as she snaps her phone shut and sighs. She's just about to head back downstairs and see if Zinger and Yubin can join her for a late lunch when she spots a figure in the distance laying down.

Hyosung pauses and walks over, realizing with a start it's the boy with glasses she sat next to in the library a few weeks ago. Unsure of what to do, she sits next to him and gently shakes his shoulder. "H-hey."

There isn't a response, but Hyosung can see he's breathing evenly, which eases her worry. She unwraps the jacket from around her waist, carefully tucking it around him.

This seems to get his attention, and he looks around sleepily. "Where am I?"

"You're on the rooftop," she explains quietly, "and you looked cold. So...um...I covered you with my jacket."

Jinki smiles at her, and Hyosung feels her heart actually skip a beat, as cliché as she admitted the feeling to be.

"Thank you. You're in my choir class, right?"

"Yes," Hyosung finds herself replying without hesitance, "and um...I sat next to you in the library once..."

They sit in awkwardly comfortable silence; Jinki still with her coat wrapped around him. It's what he says next that surprises her.

"You like cookies, right?"

"...Why do you ask?"

"There's a café nearby that makes really good ones," Jinki explains with a blush coating his cheeks as he pulls the fabric closer around him. "I...erm....this is kind of awkward, but...do you want...to get some cookies with me later?"

Hyosung's eyes disappear into crescents at the mention of this, and she can't help herself from laughing.

"I'd love that, I really would."

Jinki reaches out and squeezes her hand softly in gratitude, matching her smile with one of his own. It's then Hyosung realizes that maybe, just maybe, Jieun was right.
