I don't have an Iphone, or any smart anything, but I have noticed ALL of what you mentioned in media devices for the PC that play music. I remember once upon a time you could download and create as many playlists that you wanted, and could choose and play them. I stopped listening to music on the computer when I lost the ability to easily do that. And I think we all know that it takes simplicity for me to be able to do anything using technology.
I know a lot of folks feel that way - and I also know that for a while iTunes was /good/ at making improvised playlists based on one song. That was really the one thing it was good at. Well.. they "fixed" that too! lol.
I am so glad to know that I am not the only person who has problems with ITunes. I do not have an IPhone, but do have 2 Ipod touches. One is older just for our water aerobics, the other I have had for a couple of years and I use mainly for Audio Books which I get from Audilble.com so I don't have to deal with ITunes.
I have tried and tried, and just can not really figure it out. It is the only software that has just kicked my ass. I thought it was because I was getting older, but I don't seem to be alone on this.

I used to like winamp a lot, but it started crashing my previous laptop (7 or so years ago) so I stopped using it.
I'll have to see if they have an iphone app...
