I was watching an interview with Chris Christie and Stephen Colbert this weekend (part 1 and part 2, if you're interested), and I had a bit of a revelation. It turns out Gov. Yeah, this pretty much reminds me of the French presidential elections in 2002; in which the Socialists' Lionel Jospin was unexpectedly defeated in the first round, leaving the second round between the centre-right Jacques Chirac and the Front National's Jean-Marie Le Pen. All my progressive French friends (many of whom, foolishly in retrospect, had boycotted the first round because they thought Jospin was useless) found themselves having to hold their noses, go into the voting booth (some of them literally cried with rage while doing it) and vote for Chirac, that corrupt old right-wing rogue, who won an 82% landslide. It was outrageous, but the French could see what was at stake and enough of them remembered that you do not play high-minded electoral games when literal fascism is around the corner. I hope against hope the US appreciates this come November, though I am far from sanguine.
