[A good way to meet new people (though maybe not ideal circumstances), Lelouch decides to answer this question. He has been through this several times, having a sibling or a close friend leave Somarium to return to their world, and it never gets easier but at least he has come to understand what is happening and why (sort of) it does.

Somarium doesn't care about permanence, people come and go like the wind. They could be sitting beside you, talking about what you're going to do one day or something that happened last week, only to disappear later that afternoon. It was difficult at first, he recalls, he spent days searching for his sister or for his knight who had been within arms reach the day before.]

Perhaps your companion has returned to their home? That usually seems to be the case when a person has gone missing in Somarium.
