You know it's a good sermon when the priest references Indiana Jones, and not only is it in context, it makes a valid spiritual point.

I once heard a great sermon about the Lion King. :P

My home pastor (former pastor, now) once referenced Jewel in a sermon.

The only Jewel I can think of is the actress who played Kaylee on Firefly.

Actually, I'd just as soon keep thinking about her, so don't tell me if I'm wrong. (:

I met a Catholic priest who apparently talked about running away to the circus in nearly every sermon he gave, including the one that I heard.

My priest's favorite way of illustrating points in his sermons is to talk about the Red Sox.

Do tell?

I love quirky sermon illustrations.

The best part is that it wasn't even all that quirky! There's a very old analogy between the Mother of God (within whom God was enthroned during her pregnancy) and the Ark (or more specifically, the Mercy Seat). His particular point was that even as secular as our culture is now, we still remember that the Ark is too holy to be touched.

This morning I compared the overcharging of Jewish pilgrims for doves to the overcharging of airport convenience stores for bottled water.

Not too quirky, but it seemed apt.

Oh, and I also compared the pilgrims' situation to someone travelling from out of state to see The Boss play at Giants Stadium.
