Awwww this is SO FUCKING GOOD, wow. Annie's pov was a perfect choice and ahlshja;s ahhh Sam's face at the ending, that was so beautiful. The end line sums up everything in this story and I'm extra delighted that it was Gene who was behind all of this. The gen is exquisite and the little hints of Sam/Gene are extra lovely. This was really just heart-warming and I love how they've all been able to come together for Sam's sake. Because they're a team and no one should be alone on Christmas and ashlsa;a BEAUTIFULlllLLllll ;___;

The reveal at the end is so completely beautiful and it's everything I was hoping it would be. Thank you thank you thank you <3 *HUGS*

Chris was still unperturbed. 'Going back to Hyde?'
This is a bigger kick in the teeth than I realised. Poor Sam. In one sense it sounds like Chris is saying 'we don't want you here' (even though he means 'aren't you going back to see your family/old mates'), and in the other it reminds Sam that he really can't go back even if he wanted to. Hyde no longer exists as a codeword.

We have a DI who's hellbent on being miserable and pulling all of us down with him.
Awwww, Gene. Doing something nice for Sammy-boy under the guise of improving general morale.

they all accepted Annie taking the lead and directing the proceedings (she had a suspicion that Gene had made sure they wouldn't moan)
I looooooove your Annie, being confident and gracious, and her friendship with Gene ensuring nobody gives her any flack.

confusion to realization, astonishment, and finally... gratitude. He bowed his head, and Annie thought she could see his eyes glimmering a little. Gene ruffled his short hairThis is just the cutest and also the most heartbreaking. I ( ... )

I think my absolute favorite thing about this is how good Gene is at hiding his true intent from Sam with angry bluster! I ADORE the planning bit, when Gene switches from playacting to genuine enthusiasm for the Christmas plan. I love that he fooled Annie, too - but of course she's quick on the uptake and is already making a list.
