My Q3 2004 post

So I have this other site now. It's a "Blog," which means I'll probably never give it out to people I know -- I feel like blogs are great public forums for those who love attention, but generally, me and attention only get along marginally. That's where I'm putting the funny, this is where I put the insight and commentary. (I'm hesitant to soil ( Read more... )

I miss you. I read a Chuck Klosterman article the other day and thought of you. It was about Michael Jackson being a "normal" guy who's just judged all the time. It was silly.

Not really a PLUG, per se martin_bishop September 29 2005, 14:09:37 UTC
But it was definitely the nail in the coffin, point wise.

I'm decent. My job killed me last week. This week was a lot less bad, so hopefully I'll be awake for part of the weekend that I'm not busy.

Still not user friendly by any means, but it was originally created for fun, but a community sprung up around it. It's as old as windows, probably older, derived from an even older unix clone, minix.

But yes it is free, and for the average chump who basically uses the computer for internet and the like, it's more than sufficient. Only problem is getting your average device to work with it. Wireless support is still sketchy at best, mostly because device manufacturers are generally uninterested in writing their software (read compiling, it doesn't take that much more work) to work on linux.

VectorLinux is the choice for older computer systems. It's a stripped down slackware clone that really only includes the bare essentials. For the average joe wanting to check it out, I recommend Ubuntu.

I tried Mandrake, but Vector is so fast with my old laptop... and yeah, compatibility can be an issue (trying to get some of the weirder wireless adaptors to work is hell.) But I loves it. So clean, so fundamental.
