Book browsing, and Kindle lust.

I rarely read a book based solely on reviews, but every now and then a comment in a review intrigues me, and makes me want to read the book.

I was browsing Amazon, hopping from book to book. You know how that is - you follow that "customers who purchased this also purchased this" trail down all sorts of rabbit holes far removed from the book you ( Read more... )

Won't comment on the Kindle (am trying to keep it in my peripheral vision away from my "want" centers : < ) Will comment on going down the Amazon "look at this book! and how about this?" rabbit hole. Love the sound byte on Grimwood. Have you ever read William Gibson? I think you'd probably love "Pattern Recognition".

I am the wrong guy to be taking advice from regarding gadgets. If its electronic, I say go for it. I have seen the Kindle and I like it quite a bit. I have been saying that e-books are the way to go.

*finger hovers over the "buy now" button on the Kindle site...*
Push it, push it!!

I am lusting after one, too. I even like the fact that the new ones can read to you.

RVers love them because they can have lots of books, and books are heavy if you are a full timer. (I am an ex full timer)

I, too, love the instant gratification factor and the cost of the book is less than a hard back.

I'm waiting, so will surely feel very righteous when I do buy, having waited so long.

My Kindle will never be the only way I read books --- I love the real thing too much. But what Kindle does, it does really well. I have the Kindle 2, and the battery life is impressive. Classics are about a dollar (or free altogether), and the cost of most other books is $10 or less. Obviously nothing beats K for travel. I have twenty books onboard now and will probably get a few more before we leave for a month in Italy. For last year's month-long trip, I had to sneak books into all of our suitcases, I couln't take all the ones I wanted, and I still had to pay overweight charges on one bag.

But even on a day-to-day basis, the K that fits so sweetly into a pocket in my bag is always there for me to whip out and flick on in any waiting room or on any line.

Click that button --- you'll never regret it!

(Oh, and forget the Sony --- it's non-intuitive to use, the battery sucks, and customer service is a nightmare.)

Yes, I researched both the Sony and the Kindle thoroughly, and found that real READERS preferred the Kindle. The Sony sufficed only for the electronic gadget freaks, because of all the functions - but I want it for READING, not for it be a Blackberry.
