Okay, dudes, this is a good one: I was telling this woman at my work about going on tour with Brooke and his band, and she was all "what kind of music do they play," and I guess I said "Indie pop, I guess?", I guess, and she all wrinkled up her nose and went "Indie pop. What is that, anyway?" She's like sixty and her husband is some session ( Read more... )

hey, yeah, so in what sense will you be going on tour with them? are you a roadie?

post-9/11 indie pop, as I see it:

the shins
modest mouse
of montreal
the new pornographers
peter bjorn and john
final fantasy
circulatory system
sufjan stevens
wolf parade
st. vincent
jens lekman
franz ferdinand
hot hot heat
bloc party
ted leo
yo la tengo (though most of their good stuff precedes 2001)

metric?
feist?
broken social scene?

and my house maintains a fatwa against the following artists, but for the sake of completism:

arcade fire
death cab for cutie
the decemberists
postal service

there's lots of others that I assume don't quite count in terms of classification, the Strokes and The White Stripes chief among them.

Yeah, no rockin' rockers.

Now that you've put them in the same bracket as the Decemberists and Death Cab, your virulent feelings toward the Arcade Fire make a lot more sense to me. Because, like, that's how I feel about those bands. But a fatwa against AF and not Wolf Parade?

Other than that, I'm gratified to see our lists pretty much match up, although I can't help but see Modest Mouse, like Yo La Tengo, as a 1990s band. And thanks for catching the New Pornographers, who I missed, inexplicably given the origin of this whole enterprise.

I guess I'm half roadie, half speaker-of-German-to-intransigent-Kraut-sound-dudes, half (I contain multitudes) speaker-of-English-and-hang-partner so they have someone else to talk to and don't hate each other by the time they go on stage. I guess? I have to admit I didn't look the horse in the mouth.

Whoa, I just answered that comment in complete reverse order. Awesome.

yeah, i put wolf parade in a different boat than the arcade fire despite their various similarities. i like spencer krug a fair bit and i feel like his input (and heavy debt to frog eyes) sways them a bit closer to the west coast school of modern indie rock. plus I feel like Wolf Parade are a little more raw and streety, whereas AF are cut in the church to fit the arena. at the very least, they make fewer claims for their songs. or fewer claims are made about them, so they have less to get off the hook for.

OK, Saelan's list is fairly rigorous, but, hm, how about some b-list indie pop:

A Band of Bees,
Band of Horses
Bearsuit
Bishop Allen
Cass McCombs
David Pajo
Department of Eagles
Grizzly Bear
Spoon
Vetiver

..might be something in there. I can always dropload you some tunez, brodog.

DEFINITELY NOT PAJO. He's from like 1991.

Other than that, good! And since this is a cartoonish project to start, maybe trying to get a straight flush of animal bands is no bad thing. It gives it an identity.

Unicorns? Maybe they weren't Big enough? I know kids like Islands, so you could do that instead.

I listened to the Islands album, which I've enjoyed in the past, and it didn't grab me. Maybe the moment is past?
