Did I tell you guys I'm applying for an MA program at UBC in English Language, so I can work for this "Dictionary of Canadianisms on Historic Principles" they have there? It's gonna be gay. By which I mean, this entry for "gay" from the Oxford English Dictonary tells you why it's gonna be great ( Read more... )

wahoo to school say I, say I! Maybe I'll say more once I get through the rest of your post. My favourite use so far is "Forward, impertinent, too free in conduct, over-familiar. He got gay one day. I warned him once, and then I threw him off the distributing floor." I can't imgine using gay in that context - think of all the terrible misunderstandings.

I really like how cautious they are about declaring senses of a word obsolete. Only six senses in all of that. Incidentally, if you go to gateway.uvic.ca and click on "fulltext" and then "reference works," you can access the full OED from home as long as you have a student ID. I just found that out and I'm sad it wasn't sooner.
