The migraine isn't a migraine. It's an ear infection that may be moving into my sinuses. I have eardroppy things, but my doctor confessed essentially I could pour vinegar in my ear and get the same sort of help ( Read more... )

Well I really recommend reading up on it with NF Stovold’s Mornington Crescent: Rules and Origins as its a bit complex to get into in the space of a comment (sort of like asking 'what is bridge?' really), but essentially it is a strategy game where in the players attempt to get to Mornington Crescent Station whilest also blocking the other players from getting there through cunning use of other stations.

A lateral move, such as mine, is a devilish though standard one but admittedly someone could cut back towards Moorgate, on their way to Baker.

Though I'd be forced to be a right bastard then and call Dollis Hill, even if that dropped us into a loopround, since I'm reasonably certain (though would have to double check the ruling) that I could knip for a few rounds and break out at West Acton.

Good luck in finding a copy of Stovold's book though. Last I heard it is still out of print. If you can find a copy though, it is probably your best reference.

Don't die. I'll be annoyed.

You can't go lateral to Kings Cross, it's not a legal move anymore. At least not in professional circles. The MCPA (Nat'l) web pages says that they ruled last week that the Picadilly Gambit (and all its derivatives, like Whitechapel, Powell, Brixton backsweep, etc) unbalances the competition severely now that the Ally Pally has been taken out of the running. That adds back the three stops that Kings Cross saves you, and makes it an illegal path.

(That's if you're playing with current competition books, that is. If we're using Queen's College house rules then it's a different story. XD )

Ah, but remember the ruling they made in lsst years semi-final matchup between Rustakova and what-her-name the East Ender. International games are not bound by the rulings of the National MCPA until a binding resolution has been passed in conference.

And the conference in Ibinza, as observed in a game earlier today, was a washout so they had to reschedule.

I admit, I'm much more focused on the international game, as it balances the playing track a bit more for those of us who aren't ex-pats.

(And somehow? I'm not in the -least- surprised you know Mornington Crescent. Ah, if only we'd known about it back in high school or immediately after.)

I've gotten much better at Mornington Crescent and related games since I've been at college. Surprisingly enough, the ability to think "three stops ahead and one to the right," as they say, has proven useful in dealing with people in real life as well... XD

It's a shame nobody's put on a decent charity match for a while. I'd give my right arm to see one that involved Stephen Fry.

Sorry to hear about the ear infection. I hate them.

I am so going to have to look at that Mornington Crescent page. I remember some of the stuff about it that I looked up back in high school, but not a whole lot...gah, that's almost 10 years ago now :P
