A former Kohl's worker was shopping the other night and we were talking. She asked me if I was in a relationship and I replied I was. Then she made a comment about "her." I didn't correct her. I've never dealt with that before, so I froze and changed the subject as much as possible

That's a hard one when it hits you in the face. I mean, on the one hand is it up to you to correct her. On the other hand why not just jump in there and tell her it's "him." If Kohl's has a good nondiscrimination policy then it is not like she can report you to the gestapo and get you fired or anything like that. And if she has an issue with it then she can go screw herself.
